To hold the World Championship at a high level, which will take place from May 6 to May 22, 2016, a special headquarters was created in Moscow, the purpose of which is to organize hockey battles at the highest level, ensure the safety of the coaching staff, athletes, guests and fans of the tournament. Also, the headquarters staff will be tasked with organizing accommodation and training for the participating teams and preparing arenas for matches.

Championship participants
In addition to our team, which automatically guaranteed itself the right to participate as hosts in the World Cup of Hockey, 15 teams participating in the 2015 World Cup and 6 participants of the 1st division of the 2015 World Cup are competing. The total number of participants will be traditional – 16. All 16 teams will be divided into two groups, each with 8 teams. The teams that take first to fourth place in each group will advance to the next stage, and the bottom 2, regardless of group, will be relegated to the 1st division. Since 2007, the regulations have been changed.
If the winner is not determined during regular time, then an additional five minutes is played until the first goal is scored. If overtime does not determine the winner of the duel, then the teams will take shootouts, 3 each, in case of a tie, the teams will take one shootout until the first different outcome. The second stage involves “knockout games”. The team that finished first in the group will play the team that finished 4th in the opposite group, and the team that finished in 3rd place will play the team that finished 2nd.
In the quarter finals of the Hockey World Cup, the winners of matches involving teams that took 1st place in the group meet the winners of matches of teams that took 2nd place. The winners of the semi-final matches advance to the final, the losers play in the match for 3rd place. If in the second stage matches the score is tied in regulation time, the teams will have to play overtime lasting 10 minutes before the first goal is scored. Extra time in the final has been increased to 20 minutes. If there are no goals scored in extra time, the teams will take shootouts, as in the group round, 3 each, and, if necessary, one at a time until the first different outcome.
Where will the games be held?
All matches of the 2016 World Hockey Championship will be held in two cities: Moscow and St. Petersburg. Moscow will host matches of “Group A”, in which the Russian national team will play, 2 games of the quarterfinal stage, 2 games of the semi-final stage, a match for 3rd place and the final.
St. Petersburg will host Group B matches and 2 quarterfinal matches. And although there is not much left before the start of the tournament, there is still no clear understanding in which palaces in Moscow and St. Petersburg the competition will be held.

The Megasport Sports Palace and the Arena of Legends were candidates for the official venue for the 2016 World Cup hockey battles in Moscow; the final decision was made in favor of the arena.
