Material from the site https://site/

Living in the help of the Most High, he will settle in the shelter of the Heavenly God. Says the Lord: Thou art my Protector and my Refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. Yako Toy will deliver you from the snare of the trap, and from rebellious words. His cloak will overshadow you, and you will trust under His wing. His truth will surround you with a weapon, you will not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, from the thing that passes in darkness, from the cloak and demon of the midday. Thousands will fall from your country, and darkness will be at your right hand, but it will not come close to you. Look before your eyes, and you will see the reward of sinners. For You, O Lord, are my hope, You have made the Most High your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and wound will not come close to your body. As His Angel commanded you, keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot against a stone. Tread on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver; I will cover and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him; I am with him in sorrow, I will destroy him and glorify him; I will fill him with long days, and show him My salvation.

Psalm 90

From the book of Archpriest Valentin Biryukov (Psalm 90):

In 1977, in Samarkand, I witnessed another case of amazing healing after prayers.

One day a mother brought two daughters to me, one of them suffered from seizures.

Father, perhaps you know how to cure Olya? She was completely tormented by seizures - she was beaten twice a day.
- Is your daughter baptized? - I ask.
- What about - baptized...
- Well, does she wear a cross?
Mom hesitated:
- Father... How can I tell you... Yes, it’s only been two weeks since they put the cross on her.

I shook my head: what kind of Christian is without a cross? It's like a warrior without a weapon. Completely defenseless. I started talking to them. He advised me to confess and take communion, and to read the 90th Psalm - “Alive in the help of the Most High” - 40 times every day.

Three days later this woman came with two daughters - Olya and Galya. They confessed, took communion and began to read Psalm 90 40 times daily, as I advised them (my parents taught me this prayer rule). And - a miracle - only two days later the whole family read the 90th Psalm before Olya stopped having seizures. We got rid of a serious illness without any hospitals. Shocked, my mother came to me and asked how much money was needed “for the work.”

“What are you doing, mommy,” I say, “it wasn’t me who did it, it was the Lord.” You see for yourself: what the doctors could not do, God did as soon as you turned to him with faith and repentance.

Another case of healing is associated with Psalm 90 - from deafness.

An elderly man named Nikolai came to our Ascension Church in Novosibirsk. He began to complain about grief:
- Father, I have trouble hearing for a long time, since the 4th grade of school. And now it has become completely unbearable. In addition, both the liver and stomach hurt.
- Do you keep fasts? - I ask him.
- No, what kind of posts are there! At work, whatever they feed me, that’s what I eat.

It was the fifth week of Lent.

Nikolai, I tell him, until Easter eat only Lenten food and read “Alive in the Help of the Most High” 40 times daily.

After Easter, Nikolai comes in tears, and takes his brother Vladimir with him.
- Father, God save you!.. At Easter they sang “Christ is Risen” - but I didn’t hear it. Well, I think the priest said - fast, God will help, but as I was deaf, I remain deaf! As soon as I thought that, it was as if the plugs had popped out of my ears. Immediately, in an instant, I began to hear normally.

This is what fasting means, this is what prayer means. This is what it means to read “Alive in the Help of the Vyshnyago”, without any doubt. We really need pure, repentant prayer - more food and water. If the water in the glass is cloudy, we won’t drink it. So the Lord wants us to pour out not muddy, but pure prayer from our souls, He expects pure repentance from us... And for this we are now given both time and freedom. There would be zeal.

A lot of sick people come to the temple. I give advice to everyone - to confess your sins, take communion and read the 90th Psalm 40 times every day (“Alive in the help of the Most High”). This prayer is very powerful. My grandfather, father and mother taught me to pray this way. We read this prayer at the front - and there were such miracles with God’s help! I advise those who are sick to read this prayer as a memory. This prayer has special power to protect us.

My grandfather Roman Vasilyevich loved to pray. I knew many prayers by heart. He often read prayers over the possessed: Psalm 90, “To the King of Heaven” and others. I believed that holy prayers could help anyone, even the sickest person. Probably, due to his childish pure faith, the Lord gave him such a gift that he knew in advance when the demoniac would be brought to him. They would bring him into the hut, tied hand and foot, and the grandfather would read the prayers, sprinkle him with holy water - and the man who had just been screaming and raving, became calm, and immediately slept for 2 hours after the grandfather’s prayers.

It was grandfather Roman Vasilyevich who taught me how best to read the 90th Psalm - “Alive in the help of the Most High.” 40 times daily, and for sick people, especially those possessed by demons, it is better to read this psalm by heart. I have been convinced many times of the great power of this prayer if prayed with faith and contrition.

), you probably wondered: why do they read it? Psalm number 90 is a prayer endowed with enormous power: it can protect from all manifestations of evil and negativity, from unkind people, from evil spirits.

The ninetieth psalm is the strongest amulet. This prayer exhibits its protective properties not only when it is directly pronounced. The function of the amulet “Psalm 90” is well preserved when written by hand on a piece of paper, a piece of leather or fabric. If you carry this “letter” close to your body, it will protect you from any misfortunes and misfortunes, accidents, ill-wishers and enemies, magical and other types of energy influence from the outside.

Mention of “Psalm 90” is found even in the Gospel (Matthew - 4:6; Luke - 4:11). While the Savior was fasting for 40 days in the desert, Satan tempted him. In order not to succumb to demonic machinations, Christ read the 11th and 12th verses of this prayer.

In Western Christianity, the ninetieth psalm is read or sung during evening worship; in the Middle Ages it was a mandatory part of the readings on Good Friday.

And the Eastern Church uses prayer at funerals and memorial services, and “Psalm 90” is an indispensable part of the 6th hour service.

In Church Slavonic

“Psalm 90” is recommended to be read in Church Slavonic, although there are also translations of the prayer into modern Russian. The reason lies in the fact that during translation it is impossible to convey with absolute accuracy the deep meaning and content of the prayer text, its key idea.

In Church Slavonic, “Psalm 90” reads as follows:

In the Synodal translation into modern Russian, the text of the prayer “Psalm 90” is as follows:

History of the origin of prayer

“Psalm 90” originates from the biblical book “Old Testament: Psalms” - there it comes under number 90 (hence the name). However, in Masoretic numbering it is assigned number 91. In the Christian religion, this prayer is also known by its first words: in Latin - “Qui habitat”, in Old Slavonic (Church Slavonic) - “Alive in help”.

Regarding the origin of “Psalm 90,” researchers are of the opinion that its authorship belongs to the prophet David. He wrote it in honor of his deliverance from a three-day pestilence. This prayer is also called the “Song of Praise of David” - under this name it appears in the Greek Psalter.

Contents and main ideas of the prayer “Alive in Help...”

Psalm 90 is one of the most powerful prayers. The text of the psalm is permeated with the idea that the Lord is the protector and reliable refuge of all those who believe in him. He convinces us that a person who sincerely believes in God with all his heart may not be afraid of any danger. “Psalm 90” conveys the idea that faith in the Most High has irresistible power. Elements of prophecy can also be found in prayer - it points to the coming of the Savior, who is the most important protector of any believer.

“David’s Song of Praise” is distinguished by expressive poetic language. It has its own clear structure. It can be roughly divided into three parts:

  1. The first part is verses one and two.
  2. The second part is verses three to thirteen.
  3. The third part is verses fourteen to sixteen.

Interpretation of the prayer “Psalm 90” and why it is read

Unfortunately, not everyone understands “Psalm 90” without a full interpretation. If we analyze each verse of the prayer, we get the following:

  1. Those who live under the help of the Lord will be under God's protection. As Saint Athanasius believed, God’s help means the divine commandments that the Lord himself gave to people. Keeping these commandments can protect you from demons and all kinds of misfortunes. Accordingly, only those who live by these commandments will be under divine protection.
  2. A person who has unshakable faith in God can call the Lord his “refuge” and “intercessor.”
  3. The Lord will deliver man from the “net of the trap.” “The catcher’s net” is an allegorical image, meaning an attack on the body - physical and demonic (i.e. lust, sinful passion). God will also deliver from “rebellious speech,” which means slander that causes rebellion and unrest in the soul of the slandered person.
  4. God loves the truth, therefore, only the person who is sincere with the Lord will be completely safe, under his reliable “wing.”
  5. Those who live in the help of God are not afraid of night fears coming from demons or bad people (robbers, thieves, etc.), nor are they afraid of arrows - physical, hitting the body, and mental, coming from demons and passion.
  6. He who lives in the help of the Lord may not be afraid of “things that pass in darkness” (demonic passion, fornication), “the noonday demon” (laziness, carelessness).
  7. A thousand or ten thousand arrows will not harm the one who lives in the help of God. Arrows mean temptation to commit sins, devilish machinations that counteract a righteous, godly life.
  8. God's help will help us see with our own eyes the retribution of wicked people.
  9. Strong protection from the Lord will come for the reason that the believer trusts in God with all his heart and mind, sees in him his intercessor.
  10. No evil will come close to a person who trusts in God; everything corporeal, possessing a material shell, will be protected from troubles and diseases.
  11. God protects the person who trusts in him through the Angels.
  12. The angels will carry the believer in their arms, and the person will not stumble over a stone. The hands of Angels are a symbol of the protective force that will protect a person during temptations and difficult life situations. The stone symbolizes sin, everything that acts as an obstacle to virtue.
  13. A person who trusts in God is not afraid of snakes and large predators. Asp and basilisk are poisonous snakes. Asp is a symbol of slander, basilisk is a symbol of envy (both one’s own and that of other people). The lion and dragon symbolize harshness and inhumanity. A righteous person is able to overcome all these negative manifestations.
  14. Man trusts in God, so the Lord protects him and delivers him from all danger. Only those who lead a righteous life and keep the commandments given to them truly know God’s Name.
  15. God will hear the person who trusts in him if he calls to Him. The Lord will be with him in sorrow, deliver him and glorify him in earthly and eternal life.
  16. The Lord gives eternal life as a reward to a person who trusts in God, and can also extend his earthly life.

This psalm has the following inscription: The praise of David's songs is not written by the Jews. And in the Psalter published by the Russian Bible Society, translated from the Hebrew language, it has the following inscription: “David’s Song of Praise,” to which the inscription of the Vulgate corresponds, i.e. Bible in Latin, without added words: not inscribed with Jew, but simply: “laus cantici David XC”, i.e. "David's song of praise." All this indicates that in the ancient Jewish collection of psalms no inscription was placed over the 90th psalm, and that the short inscription that now exists: “David’s Song of Praise” was entered into the book of psalms later, for example, during the creation of the Greek translation of the LXX interpreters , and was introduced, of course, not spontaneously, but on the basis of the ancient traditions of the Old Testament Church that reached the wise publishers, who attributed the composition of this psalm to David.

The peculiarity of this psalm is the rapid change of faces expressing their thoughts and feelings. Here either the prophet expresses his thoughts about the righteous man who lives in complete hope in God (vv. 1–2), or, turning to the righteous man, he reassures him with the blessings that are poured out on the one who trusts in God (vv. 3–8, 10–13) , or speaks on behalf of this righteous man, completely devoted to the will of God (vv. 2,9), or on behalf of God Himself, expressing His favor to the righteous man (vv. 14-16).

Some of the interpreters see in this psalm a general, abstract poetic image of a righteous man, in which all cases of deliverance are taken by the psalmist completely arbitrarily, without any historical relation, and who goes as much to David as to Hezekiah, and to any other righteous man. Others point out in him such features that almost all remarkably suit the face of the pious king of Judah Hezekiah and the circumstances of his time. Whoever is familiar with the history of this Hezekiah, it is absolutely clear that in the indicated image of the righteous man we have a poetic image of this story. In view of the clear similarity of the presented image of the righteous man with the story of Hezekiah, already Blessed. Theodoret, who generally attributed all the psalms to David, recognized Psalm 90 as a prophecy of David about Hezekiah.

He who lives in the help of the Most High will dwell in the shelter of the Heavenly God, says to the Lord: You are my intercessor and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him.

The not entirely clear meaning of the sayings of verse 1, according to the Church Slavonic translation, becomes clear when reading other translations. So, translated from Hebrew it reads: “He who lives under the cover of the Most High (in the shelter of the Heavenly God) rests in the shadow of the Almighty”; and translated from Latin it reads like this: “Whoever lives with the help of the Most High (Allissimr) will abide in the protection of the Heavenly God. He will say to the Lord: You are my intercessor and my refuge: my God, I will trust in Him.” This expresses, on the one hand, the complete devotion to the will of God of a person who trusts in no one else but God, and on the other, the complete security of one who is in close communion with the Heavenly God, under His strong protection. In prayer he turns to God alone and boldly says to Him: You are my protector and You alone are my refuge; and not only in prayer, but also before others confesses: He is my God and in Him I trust.

For He will deliver you from the snare of the trap and from rebellious words: His lashes will overshadow you, and under His wing you will hope: His truth will surround you with weapons.

Here the prophet, turning his speech to the one most protected by God, says that the Lord God will deliver you from the net of the fowler (bird catcher or trapper, from the network of catchers) and from any hostile word that could lead you into confusion ( rebellious at words), in general from any slander and conspiracy against you. He will cover you, will overshadow or protect you as if with his shoulders ( His splash will overshadow you), and you will have hope that under His protection you will remain safe ( and under the krill you hope). In the first expression, the image of speech is borrowed from those warriors who, during battle, stand in the front ranks and cover those behind them with their shoulders, and in the second expression, the similarity is taken from birds who cover their chicks with their wings. Thus, the psalmist’s thought can be expressed this way: the almighty power of God will protect you, and, being under the protection of Divine care, you will be completely safe. Herself true God will surround you on all sides weapons. Under by the truth of God One must understand here God's fidelity to the promises: He promises His help to all those who trust in Him, and really gives it. According to the translation from Hebrew, the last speech is expressed as follows: “His truth is a shield and a fence.”

Do not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow that flies during the day, from the thing that passes in the darkness, from the debris and the demon of the midday.

Many people are susceptible fear at night time, with threatening danger, and sometimes without any danger at all, with just the idea of danger, due to the surrounding darkness. Some, in addition, brought up in various superstitions, experience some kind of unaccountable fear during so-called “meetings”. Although such superstitions about “meetings” are not universal and not acceptable to everyone, nevertheless they have always existed, one might say, from ancient times, and therefore they cannot be ignored. The psalmist, as if representing all such cases fear, calms a person who is under the protection of God, telling him: protected by the power of God, you will not be afraid of any dangers, neither obvious nor secret, neither day nor night, you will not have nightly fear, you will not be afraid and arrows flying during the day. You'll get rid of from any(hostile) things, which happens at night ( transient in darkness), from a dangerous “meeting” and from any accident unexpected during “meetings” ( from cartilage, i.e. from everything that happens to us accidentally), and from the evil spirit that attacks at noon. Under the name noon demon of course an evil spirit, on a clear day or at noon disease that causes various types of harm to a person, for example, pestilence and infection. Others, by the name of the midday demon, mean the heat of the sun, which burns intensely in Palestine and is deadly to travelers. And blzh. Jerome, in agreement with this, meant the pestilence, or deadly wind, known in the East, called Samum.

Thousands will fall from your country, and darkness will be at your right hand, but it will not come close to you: behold, behold your eyes and see the reward of sinners.

Dangers threaten people from all sides. On the one side thousand, or as translated from Hebrew: “A thousand will fall near you and darkness on your right hand” ( and darkness at your right hand), i.e. and thousands, and tens of thousands, and countless numbers of enemies will attack you, but they will not touch you ( won't come close to you). Or this: if a thousand enemies attack you on one side, and ten thousand or countless numbers on the other, then even then none of them will come close to you or destroy you. And you will not only not suffer any harm from the attacking wicked, but on the contrary, you will only look with your own eyes, and you yourself will see their reward from the Lord ( Look at your eyes and see the reward of sinners). So it was with the pious king of Judah Hezekiah. When Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, attacked him with a large army and besieged Jerusalem, then Hezekiah prayerfully cried out to the Lord God, placing all his trust in Him. And the Lord soon delivered Hezekiah from the terrible danger that threatened him, defeating in one night the entire large (185 thousand) army of the Assyrians ().

For You, O Lord, are my hope: You have made the Most High your refuge.

Trusting in God and always living in the help of the Almighty he says to himself with pleasure: You, Lord, are all my hope and support ( for you, O Lord, are my hope) and having said so, you have chosen one Most High ( you put it) your refuge, says the psalmist.

Evil will not come to you, and wound will not approach your body: as His angel commanded you, keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot on a stone: you step on an asp and a basilisk and cross a lion and a serpent.

Here in verse 10, instead of the words: telesi to yours, – you need to read: your village, as this place was corrected in the footnote in the new (since 1890) editions of the Bible and Psalms, in accordance with the translation from the Hebrew, as well as the Greek and Vulgate (“village, dwelling,” Greek, Lat. tabemaculuni), And again the prophet continues to speak about the Providence of God, which protects a person who is completely devoted to Him, saying this: after you have chosen God as your refuge, no evil will come to you, and no blow will reach your dwelling (village) ( and the wound will not come near your body). And then he indicates the direct, immediate reason for such salvation from disaster or threatening evil: God, in whom you have placed all your trust, will send His angels and command them ( His angels commandment about you), to protect you in all your affairs ( keep you in all your ways). They, these angels, at the command of God, will take you, so to speak, into their arms and will support you so as not to trip your foot on a stone ( not when you dash your foot against a stone), i.e. so that you do not fall into temptation when you encounter any temptation on the path of moral life. In a word leg, says St. Athanasius of Alexandria, means “soul”, and in the word stone- "sin" . Verse 13, translated from the Hebrew, reads: “You will tread on the lion and the adder, you will trample the skimn and the dragon.” Asp, basilisk and dragon, although unknown to us, these are the most terrible snakes. This is how they are described in the famous “Interpretation of the Psalms of Palladius, Bishop of Sarapul.” “The writer of everyday life calls the venom of the asp “incurable” (); due to his ferocity, he resists all “spells” (); no less scary basilisk(spectacled snake): his fiery eyes have a dangerous effect on animals; its poison is fatal, and an animal stung by it dies soon; by invincible power and, as it were, by the power of life and death over other animals, basilisk in ancient times it was a symbol of terrible, royal power. The Dragon(boa constrictor, or boa) is the largest of all serpents, up to 30 or 40 feet long (about 12 m. - Red.), swallows people, bulls and oxen; due to his terrible power, he portrays himself as the “devil” (). Lion's power ( skimna) is known." The sayings of this verse, like the previous ones, express the idea that being protected by angels, you will repel the attacks of the most terrible enemies: you will be safe, harmless step on the asp and basilisk, you will trample(overcome) lion and dragon. These animals, as the most terrible, serve as an image of imminent danger or worst enemies. Here the idea is figuratively expressed that for a person protected by angels, nothing at all, even the most terrible, can be dangerous.

For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him: I am with him in sorrow, I will overcome him and glorify him: I will fill him with long days and show him My salvation.

After reassuring the righteous man with comforting words about the angels sent by God to protect him from various troubles and misfortunes, the prophet introduces God Himself speaking about the righteous man in the following expressions: because he trusted in Me ( for I trust in Me), then I will deliver him and hide him from danger. And because he knew and believed in Me ( for I know my name), i.e. He served and worshiped me alone, not recognizing other gods. I will always help him and listen to his prayer ( I'll hear him). If any sorrow befalls him, then I will be with him in the sorrow ( I am with him in sorrow), I will deliver him ( I'll hate him) from all sorrowful and difficult circumstances, and I will not only deliver, but also I will glorify him, i.e. and I will direct the most unfortunate circumstances to his prosperity and glory. I will do for him what I once did for the long-suffering righteous Job, or what I did for the pious king of Judah Hezekiah. By the length of the days I will fulfill it, i.e. he will receive a long life on earth and will be honored with the eternally blissful life of the next century.

Translation of prayer into Russian

He who lives under the roof of the Most High, under the shadow of the Almighty, rests, says to the Lord: “My refuge and my defense, my God, in whom I trust!” He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, from the destructive plague, He will cover you with His feathers, and you will be safe under His wings; shield and fence - His truth. You will not be afraid of the terrors in the night, the arrow that flies by day, the plague that stalks in the darkness, the plague that devastates at noon. The correct name of the sacred text is Psalm 90, which is written in the fairly well-known book of Psalms. Often prayer can be used by those who need strong God's help, who need to be shown the right path in a seemingly hopeless situation. Many people call Psalm 90 a real talisman against all troubles that can happen in life. If we compare Living Help with other prayers, then it can be put on a par with the well-known “Our Father” and “Virgin Mary, Rejoice.”

In general, all prayers aimed at saving the soul are very important. And Psalm 90 is no exception. What is interesting about the text of the prayer Living Help, which is pronounced with an appeal to the Most High?

  1. It is said that Moses himself wrote the prayer. There is also a version that the author of the text is King David, who created the prayer around the 9-10th century BC.
  2. The uniqueness of this text is that it is used not only by Orthodox people, but also by another religion - Judaism.
  3. It is best to carry the text with prayer with you, write it down somewhere and fold a sheet of paper several times so that you can read it at any convenient time, protecting yourself from any danger.
  4. Many people prefer to write the words “Living Help” on a ribbon, tying it around their belt - this serves as a literal talisman.
  5. Even in ancient times, doctors refused to treat some diseases that were difficult to cope with. Then, people resorted to prayer, which not only relieved pain, but also saved them from the most terrible diseases.
  6. If everything goes wrong, then prayer can attract good luck. True, you cannot abuse the text. You should read the prayer only if you really need luck.
  7. It will be good if the believer learns the text by heart. Psalm 90 is important to understand, to feel the whole meaning of strong prayer.
  8. There is a certain time when reading a prayer is considered the right moment to talk with the Lord God - 12 noon. In front of a person there should be 3 icons of the Savior Jesus Christ and the face of the Archangel Michael.
  9. A translation of Psalm 90 was recently produced into modern Russian. The text is accessible to a believer now, although previously it was impossible to read it.
  10. Some literally had a prayer sewn into their belts so that it would always be with the person.

How to read a prayer correctly

The main thing is the correct pronunciation of each word; there is no need to rush here. The intonation should be calm, and the voice should not be irritated and even. You can sit on your knees if the text is read in the presence of a sick person. In this case, it will be good if the person reading puts his hands on the place that hurts while reading.

To make the effect of prayer as powerful and strong as possible, you can take the Holy image of Jesus Christ in your hands. Another important rule is to say the prayer three times. After reading Living Help for the first time, you need to take a short pause, cross yourself three times and begin the second repetition.

If you follow this rule, then the effect of prayer to the Lord God will not be long in coming. Also, when reading the sacred text, you should definitely wear a cross on your body - this draws the Lord’s attention to the believer as much as possible. Priests say that you should believe in what a person says, because without faith in prayer nothing will happen. On the other hand, you should not rely only on prayer; it is only a text, the meaning of which cannot be touched. After reading Psalm 90, you need to think about how to cope with a hopeless situation, scroll through all the possible solutions in your head.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY GREAT MARTYR PANTELEMON THE HEALER,

Speaking about the ninetieth psalm, one cannot help but touch upon the topic of the gracious, beneficial and saving reading of the Psalter in the life of every Orthodox Christian.

So, for example, a representative of ancient Egyptian monasticism, which attached great importance to the Psalter in its asceticism and spiritual feat, monastery presbyter Markellus from the Lavra of Cellius said this: “Believe me, children, that nothing so outrages, disturbs, irritates, or hurts , does not humiliate, does not insult or arm demons and the culprit of evil himself - Satan, against us, as a constant exercise in psalmody. All Holy Scripture is useful, and reading it causes a lot of trouble for the demon, but nothing crushes him like the Psalter...”

The holy righteous John of Kronstadt, many hundreds of years later, wrote about the psalms: “The divinely inspired hymns of David lead everyone to prayer, devotion to God, praise and thanksgiving to God for everything; they enlighten, nourish, delight and strengthen the souls of believers; they drive away invisible enemies, heal spiritual passions, teach them to love God and keep His commandments, pray for everyone and constantly ascend to God; and their sweetness and benefit for the souls of the pious is innumerable...” And St. John Chrysostom called the Psalter “the sanctuary of the word of God.”

From personal experience I will say the following... Several years ago, a serious tragedy occurred in our close family - a baby died. It was very difficult. Especially when they brought the body home. If it had stayed in the house all night, I don’t know how we would have survived it all. Like a heavy concrete slab, grief fell on my chest, and the pressure intensified with every minute. As a priest, I insisted that the body be transported to the temple. The whole night we read the Psalter over him almost continuously. And thanks to the reading of the psalms, the feeling of grief became thinner and dissipated without a trace, like smoke. He was gone. Instead, a kind of bright lightness came. And indeed there was a feeling described by the holy prophet and King David in the 90th Psalm, “His cloak will overshadow you, and under His wing you will hope,” which is translated into Russian as “His feathers will overshadow you, and under His wings you will be safe.” Interpreters of this passage agree that the divinely inspired author David compared God to a bird that carefully wraps its chicks with its wings, protecting them from all danger.

When we read the Psalter over the baby’s coffin, there was a feeling that the Lord was very, very close, He was wrapping us in His love and care, and as if through the verses of the psalms His phrase appeared: “Everything will be fine.” And now, looking back at the tragic event more calmly, several years later, we can say that our family, with God’s help, survived the grief precisely thanks to the Psalter.

Therefore, of course, reading this great book is very, very important. It, along with the rest of the books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, should undoubtedly become a reference book for any Orthodox Christian. Because it contains spiritual wings that lift the soul to heaven.

Some of the most used psalms are the 50th and 90th. They are heard quite often in divine services and cell (home) prayers. Since ancient times, the ninetieth psalm has been considered the prayer of warriors and, in general, a prayer for the preservation of life on the battlefield or in any other dangerous situation. This is confirmed by the fact that this psalm is used in the sixth hour, dedicated to the Crucifixion of Christ. It’s as if our Lord Jesus Christ Himself reads Him during His crucifixion, trusting and believing that His human nature will be saved. Of course, we too must be like the Savior.

The history of writing this psalm is as follows... For example, Blessed Theodoret notes that the holy prophet and king David wrote it, seeing with a prophetic spiritual vision how, several centuries later, his descendant King Hezekiah would destroy the army of his Assyrian enemies. Other interpreters say that the psalm was written by David to deliver the people from a three-day pestilence. Be that as it may, hundreds of generations of Christians have experienced this psalm as a very effective weapon against demons.

In the Psalter, Psalm 90 is inscribed as “The praise of the songs of David,” or a song of praise. In fact, this is a song of thanksgiving, which divinely inspires a person to see the picture that the Lord protects and protects his faithful from all evil.

Let us analyze the psalm with God's help. It actually begins with the immutable law “He who lives under the roof of the Most High, in the shadow of the Almighty, rests, says to the Lord: “My refuge and my defense, my God, in whom I trust!” That is, we see that the main law is faith in God and fulfillment of His holy commandments. A believing Orthodox person is “living under the roof of the Almighty.” Faith is a prerequisite for salvation. A person who believes in God and tries to be guided by the life established by Him on earth of the Church, enters under the roof of the Almighty, Who, like a bird with its chick, will lovingly protect him from all evils. Many of them are listed in the psalm. Let us dwell, in our opinion, on the most incomprehensible. An arrow flying in the night - the image has both a literal and symbolic meaning, that is, fornication, adultery, a demon of passion, which often occurs at night. Sryashch - from the Church Slavonic language a meeting, an unexpected sin committed involuntarily; unexpected bad encounter or disaster. The midday demon is a symbol of midday relaxing sleep, laziness, oversleeping, gluttony, and relaxation. Asps and basilisks are types of snakes, lion and serpent are the devil. All this together is evil spirits. But in the literal sense it also means snakes, lions, and other dangerous animals. The psalm crowns and ends with the fact that the Lord will show salvation to His faithful. In these words, of course, there is a prophetic mention of our Savior Lord Jesus Christ.

Since ancient times, Rus' has practiced the tradition of wearing belts or sewing pieces of paper with the text of the ninetieth psalm into soldiers’ clothes. This, by the way, is written about in Boris Pasternak’s wonderful novel “Doctor Zhivago,” where the main character, after the battles, finds a text with the ninetieth psalm on the bodies of both the Red Army and the White Guard.

Of course, dear brothers and sisters, our soldiers need to have the text of the ninetieth psalm with them; they can wear a belt with its verses. This will definitely help. But it is very important that a person prays himself.

I have a friend who was also in hot spots. Before the war, he had never confessed or received communion. Before leaving for the hot spot, he promised God that when he returned, he would confess and partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. The Lord protected him during the war. He returned and actually confessed and received communion. And since then he has been trying to lead the life of an Orthodox Christian. I think this is a very good way. After all, we often ask God for something we don’t know. Health for the sake of health or life for the sake of its chronological biological continuation. But we should ask for it in order not to sin anymore. Remember how the Savior said to the healed paralytic: “Behold, you are healed; Sin no more, lest anything worse happen to you” (John 5:14). That is, the Lord seems to say to the recovered person: “Here I have restored your lost potential in you. Use it wisely. First of all, don’t sin. That is, fulfill the commandments and try to build your life so that it leads to Me.” It's exactly the same with warriors. Each of us people living on earth must qualitatively change ourselves and our lives in order to get closer to God and find the way to the Kingdom of Heaven. For sick people and warriors, this problem arises with particular urgency. And if a person has the determination to change his life, his sincere faith, then he will certainly become that “living under the protection of the Most High” and the Lord will fill him with long days and show Him His salvation.
