Over the past few years, Cyprus has become a very popular tourist destination, captivating holidaymakers with its high quality of services, beautiful, warm sea and at the same time budget prices. However, even here you can get confused when choosing among the many resort towns. If you dream of a relaxing, “lazy” holiday, perhaps with children and family, take a closer look at the beach town of Protaras - one of the most cozy and attractive cities in Cyprus. Despite the fact that the town became a tourist town only recently, the infrastructure here is developing very rapidly, and now the resort is famous for its hotels, bars and beautiful beaches with a turquoise sea.

Getting to know Protaras

Back in the 4th century BC. e. on the site of the village in the harbor there was the ancient Greek city of Lefkol, but as a result of numerous conquests and changes of empires, only ruins remind of the ancient town.

Before the Turkish conquest of the northern part of the island of Cyprus, Protaras was a small fishing village. In the 70s of the last century, when Turkey captured the north with its developed tourism business, the village began to rapidly develop its tourism sector.

At the moment, its population is about 20 thousand people, whose main activity is resort. There are no monumental historical buildings in the town - only modern, practical residential buildings, as well as many villas, hotels, clubs and restaurants.

Location

Protaras is located in the south-eastern part of the island, belongs to the Famagusta district, Paralimni community. The village has an oblong shape and stretches along the coast of Fig Tree Bay, washed by the warm, crystal clear, turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Across the cape from the village is the famous Cypriot resort of Ayia Napa (6 kilometers away), however, due to its distance from it, Protaras remains a quiet, calm town, where there is no bustle, rush and endless crowds of vacationers.

How to get there

The nearest airport is 65 km away in Larnaca (Larnaka International Airport) and is the main air gateway to the island. You can get from Moscow to Larnaca by direct flight in 7–8 hours. There are also direct flights from Kyiv, the journey takes up to 3–4 hours.

If you are traveling on a tour from a travel company, after leaving the airport you need to find representatives of the company who will organize a transfer to Protaras.

If you are an independent traveler, there are several ways to get to the village:

  • by taxi. This is the most comfortable, but also the most expensive option: you will have to pay about 50–60 euros. The more passengers, the higher the price will be;
  • on special transfer buses from Larnaca Airport Transfers. This option is very convenient if you are traveling with friends in a large group. A ticket will cost between 10–15 euros, depending on the number of people;
  • by public transport. The most budget-friendly, but inconvenient option, since you will have to change planes in Larnaca. The cost of a ticket for public transport is 1.5 euros during the day and 2.5 euros at night.

Climate and nature

The climate of Protaras is typical Mediterranean, with moderately high year-round temperatures and short, not pronounced transition seasons. In summer, the thermometer rises to +30...+40 °C; in winter, the minimum temperature is +10 °C.

In autumn and spring, the average daily temperature is +20…+22 °C. The sea remains warm all year round: in summer the water warms up to +28 °C, in winter - up to +18 °C.

Based on the weather in different seasons, you should choose the time of your trip: if you want to enjoy a classic beach holiday, soak up the sun and warm waves, you should undoubtedly go during the high season (May - September).

But the winter months are also good for visiting the town - at this time there are few tourists, the weather is much more favorable than in the middle zone. This is the ideal time for hiking, enjoying nature and solitude.

Important!During the high season, you must definitely use creams with high SPF filters and cover your head and body, especially in the first days of your stay on the island.

The nature of Protaras is very picturesque - tourists are attracted by numerous lagoons and bays with azure, crystal water. To fully enjoy the fauna, it is worth visiting the Cavo Greko National Park located near Protaras.

About 400 species of plants are collected there, many of which grow exclusively in that area. You can also enjoy the variety of colors and scents during the flowering period of crocuses, irises and daffodils.

The fauna of the town is not so diverse. If you go beyond its borders, you may be lucky enough to watch birds: in this regard, the island is very rich, because there are about 300 species of migratory and resident birds.

The island is also home to a wide variety of insects, snakes, and lizards. Mammal species are similar to animals of the middle zone (wolves, foxes, hares, mouflons, squirrels, martens). A turtle of the Caretta Caretta species (loggerhead turtle) may be of interest - egg laying sites in Cyprus are protected by the state, since this species is very rare.

Best beaches

The similarity of all Protaras beaches lies in their comfort, free entry, high quality services, environmental friendliness and safe swimming (almost 90% of the beaches are marked with the EU blue flag).

The sand on the beaches is fine, white-yellow, the water is blue and clean, the sea is calm with a gentle entrance. The ebb and flow of the tides are almost unnoticeable. Among the services, all beaches provide rental of umbrellas and sun loungers, they have showers and changing cabins, and lifeguards are on duty during the daytime.

Main beaches of the village:

  1. It got its name from its close location to fig groves. It is considered the main beach of the city, it has all the amenities: a large number of restaurants and cafes nearby, free parking, and safes for storing personal belongings. There is also a convenient entrance to the water, slides are equipped for children's recreation, and there are catamarans. However, it is worth considering that the number of tourists on the beach is huge due to its popularity.

  2. This beach is popular with locals. It offers rentals of umbrellas and sun loungers, parking and a cafe. For a holiday with children, this is not the best option due to the relatively sharp slope of the bottom.

  3. Located in the very south of the village, in a cozy cove that protects the beach from the wind. The calm, turquoise water, flat bottom, clean and well-groomed area make this beach popular among both locals and tourists. Not far from the beach there are caves where, according to legend, Cyclops lived.

  4. The beach has a rather sharp slope, the depth begins a meter from the entrance to the water, so the place is not suitable for families with children. However, here you can snorkel or go diving to your heart's content. There is a TABA diving center on site.

  5. A cozy, sandy beach with calm water and a gentle descent into the water. Water sports can be enjoyed here. The beach is located in the cool shade of a small grove.

  6. The beach is located in a cove protected by breakwaters; safety is monitored by lifeguards from observation towers, so this beach is considered one of the best for families with children.

Attractions to visit

Since this is a small resort town, the main purpose of tourists visiting is a beach holiday. But if you want variety or are visiting the island during the low tourist season, it will be useful to know about several historical sites that you can visit near Protaras.

The historical museum is located in the very center of the town. In it you will not find exhibits from the ancient or ancient Byzantine period, but you can study the life and culture of local residents of the 19th century. The museum consists of two sections.

The first contains fragments of ancient mosaics and frescoes, sculptural exhibits, kitchen utensils, tools, and clothing that were characteristic of the ancient period of Cyprus.

The second section houses more modern collections of exhibits. There are several thematic exhibitions here: a collection of historical vehicles, a collection of toys and pottery.

It is considered the main attraction of the town. Built on a hill at an altitude of 115 m above sea level. The building itself is small in size, built of sand stone, decorated with arched windows, domes and a bell tower.

The inside is decorated with frescoes painted in the traditional Byzantine style based on biblical motifs. At night, the church is spectacularly illuminated. Cypress and olive trees grow around the temple.

The site offers a stunning view of the entire village and surrounding area, especially impressive in the evening. The best time to visit the church is early morning and evening - in the rays of the setting sun the temple looks especially beautiful.

Did you know? There is an interesting belief associated with this temple: you must count the steps leading to the temple when ascending and descending. It is interesting that when going up, tourists count the same number of steps, but when going down, their number decreases by different amounts. It is believed that the difference in the number of steps is the number of sins of a person.

The place with such an ominous name is formed from rocks in the form of a bridge. According to legend, this bridge will collapse when the most sinful person on earth steps on it. However, this cannot be verified in reality, because the structure is dangerous (cracks have formed on the rocks), and therefore it has been closed since 2012.

You can only admire the Bridge of Sinners from the outside.

Liopetri is a small fishing village near Protaras. Its name translates as “few stones” - the village is located on the flat coast of a sea bay without any hills or cliffs.

A century ago, there were 7 temples here with a population of 400 inhabitants. However, due to numerous wars, historical vicissitudes, and changes in government, there are now only two churches left in the village.

The first is the 15th century church of Agios Andronikos with amazing paintings, an octagonal dome and a bell tower. Also check out the 16th-century Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

From time immemorial, the main occupation of local men has been fishing, while women spend their days weaving baskets, which can be purchased as a unique souvenir from Cyprus. It is worth setting aside one full day for an excursion to Liopetri.

Entertainment and relaxation

For interesting leisure time in Protaras you can find the following entertainment:

  1. Magic Dancing Waters show. When in Cyprus from April to November, you should definitely visit this spectacular performance and enjoy the fusion of water, light and music. By the way, the musical accompaniment is very diverse: from classical melodies to traditional Cypriot songs and even Russian pop music. The show starts at 21:00 daily and an adult ticket costs €19 (€34 if you book a table).

  2. The main water activities are located on the beaches of Fig Tree Bay and Pernera Beach. Here you can try diving, wakeboarding, water skiing, paragliding or parasailing. Less demanding tourists can simply ride a banana.

  3. Sea safaris and jeep rides are possible. In the first case, you will have a ride on an unusual boat with a transparent bottom. At the same time, you will be able to look at the underwater inhabitants, the Shark’s Mouth cave, and also explore the ghost town of Famagusta. With a land safari in a jeep, the walk will last about 4 hours, during which time you can learn the history of Cyprus and Protaras, get acquainted with the surrounding area and the coast.

  4. Amusement park Paliatso Luna Park. A good option for spending time if you are relaxing with children. The park has many rides, arcade games, a Ferris wheel, a 5D cinema and a roller coaster. The park is located 6 kilometers from the village.

  5. If you like to walk a lot and enjoy picturesque views, you should definitely take a route to Cape Greco. Here you will see a stunning view of the sea, countless grottoes, caves and blue lagoons. Near the cape there is the Cavo Greco National Park, which has paths for cyclists and hikers, as well as viewing platforms and benches.

Did you know? There is a legend that there is a monster in the depths of the sea near Cape Greco. It is often called Skilla - a monster from ancient Greek mythology, but locals and fishermen affectionately call the monster "To Filiko Teras", which means "friendly monster", since the maximum harm from it manifests itself in the form of torn fishing nets.

Hotels in Protaras

In Protaras you can find accommodation to suit different tastes and budgets. So, inexpensive, neat mini-hotels will cost 40 euros. More comfortable hotels near the sea can cost about 100–200 euros. There are also luxury options for 1 thousand euros or more.

Restaurants and cafes

Despite the fact that all hotels in the town serve breakfast, to get to know the real national cuisine of Cyprus, it is worth going to the restaurants and cafes that locals love to visit. You should definitely start your acquaintance with Cypriot cuisine with a meze dish.

This is a set of snacks from several items (about 10, but sometimes there can be even 20–30), which are served in small portions. Mezes are presented on the menus of both elite restaurants and small taverns. They come in meat and fish.

You should definitely try the seafood, which is always fresh and tasty here. It’s worth mentioning sweets separately, because Cypriots know a lot about them. Be sure to try the most popular local delicacies: souzoukos, loukoumades, glyka and daktylo, made from delicious and natural local products.

Some of the most popular establishments in the town:

The average tip for restaurants is 10–15% of the order amount; in cafes and bars you can leave 1–2 euros.

Transport and communications

You can travel by city and intercity buses. The main transport company is OSEA; it is convenient to view the current route schedule on its website. You need to pay the fare at the entrance to the driver; the cost of a ticket during the day is 1.5 euros, at night you need to pay 2.5 euros. You can also buy a weekly pass for 15 euros.

Important! As a legacy of the British Empire, Cyprus inherited left-hand traffic, so when using public transport, be extremely careful to stand at the stop on the right side of the road and not confuse the direction of travel.

You can also use taxi services. For convenience, you can visit the websites of the main companies: Comet Taxi or Olympic Taxi to calculate the cost of the trip. During the day and night, as well as during holidays, rates will differ. Baggage and boarding are paid separately.

If you plan to travel around the area a lot or visit nearby cities, you can rent a car if you are over 21 years old and have 3 years of driving experience. The average price for a car per day is 35 euros, but it largely depends on the number of rental days, the availability of a navigator, a child seat, insurance, season and other factors.

Remember that driving without a seat belt or a phone in your hands can result in fines of 85–100 euros! Also take into account that Cypriots are likely to reduce the amount by 5-10% when bargaining.

For ease of communication, you can purchase SIM cards from local operators: Cyta, PrimeYel, MTN. You can buy them at one of the many kiosks for 7.5 euros. Tariffing is per second; it is more profitable to call abroad using landline numbers.

To access the Internet, you can use the following options:

  • Wi-Fi in the hotel, cafes and restaurants. The disadvantage of this option is the slow speed, limited coverage and the need to place an order;
  • buy special Internet cards from mobile operators, although this will be quite expensive (for only 200 MB 10 euros);
  • use the CitiCell or RedWiFi Wi-Fi network.

What to bring

Leoforos Kapparis and Akefalou are the main central streets where shops are concentrated. There is a Lidl supermarket, but you won’t find large shopping centers or outlets in Protaras; for such pleasure you will have to go to larger cities. It is also worth considering that discounts on goods are only possible in February and August.

If you want to bring back something to remember your trip, you have many options:

  1. Olive products. It is known that Cyprus is a leader in the cultivation and export of these fruits. In addition to first-class cold-pressed oil, you can bring canned fruits and pasta.

  7. Aphrodite figurine. According to ancient Greek mythology, the birthplace of the goddess of love was Cyprus.
  8. Donkey figurines. The donkey is one of the most recognizable and popular symbols of the Mediterranean island. The figurine can be made of wood, steel, or plastic, but tourists are especially fond of glass versions of the animal.

It is always open, but experienced tourists recommend visiting it either in the morning or in the late afternoon, since climbing to a height in the heat is not an easy task.

There are 300 steps leading to the church. According to legend, a person, going up and down the steps, must count them. The number of steps when ascending is almost the same for everyone, but when descending, for an inexplicable reason, it is always less. They say the difference is equal to the number of a person's sins.

Another legend refers to the “wishing tree” that grows at the entrance to the church. Local residents claim that if you tie a ribbon to this tree, your most cherished wish will certainly come true.

The church has a pleasant atmosphere of peace and tranquility. If you want to take a break from the bustle of the world and think about the eternal, be sure to visit this place. Its special atmosphere will forever remain in your heart.

This place is especially beautiful during the flowering period, when the air is filled with the aromas of flowers.

The park has many trails for walking and cycling.
