Detailed characteristics of Sony PlayStation 4. PS4 game console, review of models and their characteristics

Both consoles were released almost at the same time (PS4 came out a week earlier). However, in Russia, Xbox One will officially appear on store shelves only in the new year. Microsoft itself claims that over two million Xbox Ones were sold in 18 days.

The holiday comes to us!

It's clear that the age of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is coming to an end. The consoles have served well. But we cannot say that it is finally time for them to retire. Still, there are still a lot of games left on your favorite console that you will want to play again and again. However, the hardware of the PS3 and Xbox 360 serves as a kind of bottleneck for developers. And the release of new consoles is like a breath of fresh air.

It’s hard to call it an accident that both Sony and Microsoft chose x86 hardware as the basis for their consoles. We believe this is the right decision. In addition, it will be interesting to see how PC games, as well as the requirements for them, will change against the backdrop of Next Gen consoles. For example, AMD is confident that when programmers begin to use all the resources of console hardware during game development, the requirements for computer components will sharply increase. Already, the “red” recommend using discrete video cards with 4 GB of video memory on board.

But let's return to the PlayStation 4. There are not very many games at the start of sales, but by the time of writing this review, Sony had already sold more than two million consoles. This is a fantastic indicator! Obviously, the first wave of purchases came from PlayStation fans. The second wave will begin simultaneously with the release of exclusive game hits. We hope they won't keep you waiting long. In the meantime, we can state the fact that the PS4 will be an excellent New Year's gift this year, and indeed next year.

After the resounding success of the PlayStation 3, which was released by the world-famous Japanese company Sony back in 2007, everyone was waiting for a sequel. And now, after six long years of waiting, the Japanese were born with a new product - the fourth generation console PlayStation 4. The characteristics of this model exceeded all expectations, and at the time of its release the console had neither analogues nor competitors. This allowed sales of the console to soar to previously unprecedented heights, which brought serious profits to the manufacturer.

Key Console Features

Let's take a closer look at the console: what is the PlayStation 4? The characteristics of the new console correspond to all modern realities and even slightly exceed them. Here are the basic data:

  • The new console has an x86-64 AMD Jaguar processor, which is not inferior in power to the best computer analogues and has 8 cores.
  • The graphics core from AMD, which produces 1.84 teraflops, is responsible for video playback
  • RAM is 8 gigabytes, generation GDDR5.
  • The total memory capacity is 500 GB; the hard drive can be replaced if desired.
  • Among the input/output devices, we can highlight a full-fledged 6xCAV Blu-ray drive, as well as the presence of USB 3.0 and AUX outputs.
  • The console can connect to the network via Ethernet, which supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T protocols, wireless systems that support IEEE 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1.
  • The set-top box has HDMI, digital and analogue outputs.

In short, the new console has everything that even the most sophisticated and demanding player needs.

As for joysticks, they can also please players. The joysticks are now wireless, have dimensions of 162 x 52 x 98 mm and a fairly light weight - 210 g. They lie very comfortably in the hands and are practically not felt. Plus, the absence of wires also plays a role - now you can play at any distance from the console. In general, the joysticks are packed with the latest technology and are not inferior in functionality to the console itself. Among the buttons you can see PS, share, options, direction of movement, actions, R1/L1/R2/L2, left stick/L3, right stick/R3. In addition to the buttons, the joystick has a capacitive touchpad that supports up to two points simultaneously. The touchpad is fully clickable. The joystick has a six-axis gyroscope built into it. In addition, it has a light bar that makes its appearance even more attractive, the joystick supports vibration and it has a built-in microphone for communicating with other players while playing or recording streams. The joystick has USB outputs, Extention and a headphone jack, so if you wish, you can connect everything you need to it. The gamepad is connected to the console via Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. The battery on the joystick is a classic lithium-ion one that can last quite a long time without recharging.

The PlayStation 4 comes with an updated PlayStation 4 Eye camera with external dimensions of 186 x 27 x 27 mm. Its characteristics are also quite worthy of respect:

  • It can shoot video with a resolution of 1200 x 800 pixels and a frame rate of 60 frames per second in video formats such as RAW and YUV. There are also shooting modes with a resolution of 640 x 400 and a frequency of 120 frames per second, 320 x 190 and a frequency of 240 frames per second, which allows you to choose the optimal quality that is convenient for you.
  • The camera has dual lenses with a fixed focus and a capture range of 30 cm.
  • The view of the updated video camera is 85 degrees, which, you see, is quite a lot.
  • The camera has a four-channel microphone that picks up even the quietest sounds.
  • The camera is connected to the console via AUX. The cable length is two meters, so the camera can be placed in any place convenient for you.

And that’s not all the innovations, there are incredibly many of them. If we listed them all, this article would not be enough. You can learn about additional innovations in the software plan from the second half of the article.

Design

So, you have already become familiar with the main innovations in the PlayStation 4. The characteristics, you see, are impressive. As for the appearance, everything is excellent here too. The dimensions of the new console are 275 x 53 x 305 mm, and the weight is about 2.8 kg. The appearance of the console is quite classic - straight lines and a slightly beveled design, in short, nothing superfluous. It fully complies with the principle of Japanese minimalism. The body of the console looks like three layers of blocks, which symbolize the power and reliability of the console. In the center of the top panel you can see the glossy manufacturer's logo. On the front panel of the set-top box you can see two USB outputs.

If you want something special, then today there is a fairly large number of different customized models of consoles, among which you can choose any one, depending on what you like best

Advantages compared to other consoles

The main competitor of the Japanese console is still the brainchild of Microsoft - the Xbox console. By and large, the consoles are quite similar and it’s hard to say which one is better. It is best to leave this question to the judgment of gamers, because each of the consoles has its own advantages and disadvantages, and, accordingly, each of them has its own army of fans who consider the competitor’s product something unworthy of attention.

Features of the new console

What else can the new PlayStation 4 boast? The characteristics have already been considered, the design too, all that remains is to see the new software-type features. And here, too, there is where to roam:

  • The console was made as convenient as possible for developers of new games, significantly reducing the time required to create them, as well as their budget. This will allow even small game development companies to promote their creations to gamers with minimal effort. As a result, it will receive a serious impetus for development.
  • While the game is downloading from the PlayStation Store, you won't have to sit and look at the loading bar with a bored face. Now you can start playing the digital version of the game the moment you download it.
  • You can update your software even while your console is offline.
  • Now there is a new “smart pause” mode. It allows you to continue playing from where you left the game immediately after turning on the console. This means that even a lack of time will not hinder your progress in the game - you can pause, turn off the console, and then turn it on and continue playing from the same place.
  • Now there is the newest Gaikai system that will let you try the game in the store before you buy it. After all, no one wants to buy a pig in a poke, right?
  • You can see what your friends are playing in real time.
  • In the store you can now immediately see a list of your recommendations. It is based on your purchases on the PlayStation Store, which, you see, is very convenient.
  • Now there is a new service called Ustream that allows you to stream games in real time. And if you encounter difficulties, you can easily ask for help from friends who will tell you how best to go through this or that moment of the game.
  • The console menu is now multitasking: while playing, you can use other applications, for example, surf the Internet.
  • Using special PlayStation Apps, you can connect to the console using PlayStation Vita and PS Vita TV. In addition, you can connect to the console using your phone.
  • The console comes with a standard headset and a 500 GB hard drive, which can be replaced with any other if desired.
  • The console has finally removed regional restrictions, so you will no longer encounter letters such as PAL and NTSC.

Differences from previous versions

The technical characteristics of the PlayStation 4 are significantly different from the characteristics of the previous version of the console. The software also has significant differences. Technically, the console has become much more powerful - everything has improved, from the processor to the RAM. An important fact was that the manufacturer abandoned the processors that it used in previous models and adopted a computer processor.

In addition, the new joysticks are different. An important update was the appearance of the Share button, which makes it possible to share the best moments of your game with friends and acquaintances or stream the game in real time.

Console modifications

Today, there are several different modifications of the Sony PlayStation 4, the characteristics of which are slightly different. Today, the most popular modifications are Neo, Slim and Pro. Each of them has its own characteristics.

PlayStation 4 Pro

One of the modifications can be called a console whose characteristics differ from the standard one. It shows higher performance due to the updated “filling”. The technical characteristics of the PlayStation 4 Pro are as follows:

  • Full 4K support. Now the game graphics will be impressive.
  • The hard drive has been increased to terabytes.
  • The graphics core has been improved by more than 2 times to expand the graphics capabilities of games.
  • Full 1080p resolution.

As you can see, there are quite a few changes. If we compare the standard console and the PlayStation 4 Pro, the characteristics of the latter significantly exceed the original, especially the visual component. In addition, the pro version boasts an additional USB port on the rear panel. The new console is scheduled for release in November 2016.

PlayStation 4 Slim

Another modification of the console is the PlayStation 4 Slim. Its characteristics have not changed, as in previous slim versions of consoles. The only thing that has changed is the size of the console. She became much smaller. Its size became smaller by a third, and its size decreased by a quarter. All this made it possible to significantly reduce energy consumption and reduce noise levels. The new set-top box is equipped with USB 3.1 ports, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac with the ability to connect via Bluetooth 4.0. In addition, the slim version of the console is cheaper than the original one.

PlayStation 4 Neo

Sony has created a high-end console called the PlayStation 4 Neo, its characteristics are somewhat different from the original. The first thing that catches your eye is the seriously improved graphics. Now, if your TV allows it, you can enjoy full 4K in all games. True, at the moment only games released in the fall of 2016 are meant, but the Japanese promise to finalize everything. TVs that support the FullHD system will also be subject to improvements - they will now have a higher stable frame rate, and the graphics detail will be higher.

The processor of this modification will be more powerful and support a clock frequency of 2.1 gigahertz, which will speed up the operation of the console by a third. The power of the graphics core was more than doubled, and its clock speed increased by more than a hundred megahertz. In addition, the RAM throughput was increased by a quarter, which is also important. Plus, an additional 512 megabytes of memory were allocated for games. All this made it possible to increase the image resolution to full 2160p. The release of the updated console is scheduled for October 2016.

10.11.2016

On November 10, sales of the new Playstation console will begin in Russia and around the world - PS4 Pro. How is it different from the regular PS4 and PS4 Slim Whether it’s worth buying – we’ll try to tell you in this article.

What is PS4 Pro and why is it needed?

Sony's new PS4 Pro console is an improved version of the PS4. Essentially the most powerful console on the market right now. It runs the same games you ran on your PS4, but with a number of advantages: improved graphics, higher and more stable frames per second (60 fps instead of 30 fps, for example) or simply better image resolution. The main feature of the PS4 Pro is support for 4K resolution in games for new 4K TVs and monitors. The console also supports so-called “deep” color, HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology and improves graphics in games for the PS VR virtual reality headset.

What does PS4 Pro look like?

Is PS4 Pro bigger than the regular PS4?

A little taller and wider than usual. But overall it looks almost the same visually. Because of the two notches in the center of the case, it seems “discharged”. If you see the PS4 Pro on its own, you'll think it's the same size as the regular PS4.

What's included in the PS4 Pro package?

  • The PS4 Pro console itself
  • Dualshock 4 gamepad of a new revision with different materials for the case and sticks, as well as with an LED strip on the touchpad
  • MicroUSB charging cable for gamepad
  • Power cable
  • HDMI 2.0 cable
  • Instructions

How much does PS4 Pro cost and where can I buy it?

In Russia, the official price of PS4 Pro from any retailer is 34,990 rubles. There are many people selling them: MVideo, Yulmart, DNS, choose anyone. Due to the expected hype, consoles are often sold as pre-orders only - keep this in mind when purchasing.

In Europe, the official price for PS4 Pro is almost the same. The console can be purchased for €429 (~31,000 rubles, you can deduct tax by receiving it through the Tax Free system, plus delivery). Where can I buy? For example, on Computer Universe. By the way, the same store also delivers to Russia on its Russian website, and you do not have to pay German VAT (the store deducts it, assuming that you yourself will pay the tax in the Russian Federation). Then the console will cost you only €360 , but they will send it by “Russian Post”, and you know what happens with it. Maybe everything will come safe. Or maybe not.

In America, PS4 Pro is the cheapest: it is sold for $399 (~25,000 rubles + tax, which is calculated separately and plus delivery costs). Where can I buy? For example, on Amazon.

Is it worth buying a “gray” PS4 Pro?

Decide for yourself. There are no regional restrictions on the PS4 Pro, which means that the console of any region will work and you can save a lot. But we do not recommend it, it will suddenly break, there is no guarantee, the product cannot be returned, etc.

What are the benefits of PS4 Pro?

It's simple. PS4 Pro is 2.28 times more powerful than the regular PS4. That is, its advantages ultimately are as follows:

  • Some games will run in native 4K resolution,
  • Some games will run at resolutions close to 4K, but still higher than 1080p,
  • Some games will have improved graphics (higher texture resolution, more effects, more particles, better anti-aliasing, better shadows and reflections),
  • Some games in VR will come with better graphics and higher frame rates (120 fps versus 90 fps on a regular PS4),
  • Some games will experience improved frame rates (60 fps vs. 30 fps on regular PS4).

What is 4K?

In case you didn't know, 4K resolution is actually 3840 by 2160 pixels. This is exactly four times more pixels than 1080p (i.e. FullHD). Accordingly, to render games with identical graphics to those on a regular PS4, but in 4K resolution, you need exactly 4 times more processor and graphics chip power. But more on that later.

What is HDR in modern TVs and monitors?

In short, HDR technology is about supporting more colors on the screen. In order to display such “deep color” on your TV, the TV must support such technology. For the average viewer, the difference between HDR and regular color is visible to the naked eye. For example, clouds in the sky may be clearly visible against the bright sun, or some fine detail in shades may be visible that was not visible before. It is impossible to see the HDR effect on a regular TV and a regular monitor, but Sony specially recorded an example video that simulates this effect and clearly shows you the difference on video.

What HDR format does PS4 Pro support?

HDR has two most common formats that are supported by different manufacturers - HDR10 And Dolby Vision. The PS4 Pro console supports the most common format at the moment – HDR10. Dolby Vision support is not planned yet, but it can easily be added in the future with firmware updates. Most modern HDR TVs only work with HDR10; the Dolby Vision format is considered more advanced, but is most often not found at all in consumer technology.

What's the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps?

A typical PS4 game will most often run at either 30 or 60 frames per second (fps). The more frames per second the game shows you, the smoother the image appears on the screen. This can be clearly seen in this gif:

However, developers sometimes deliberately set 30fps in the game - this allows them to achieve a “cinematic” effect of the gameplay and reduce the cost of the console’s processor power to frame the frame. For such games, PS4 Pro offers developers additional power that can be used to improve graphics: better effects, reflection, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, better shadows and occlusion.

For some games, in particular multiplayer ones (for example, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty, etc.), the standard is to display the image at 60 fps. And some games (like Bloodborne) treat optimization poorly, and in the most intense moments they can drop to 15 fps. If the number of frames per second in a game constantly jumps from 15 to 60, then this is clearly visible and can cause discomfort.

PS4 Pro is made with these problems in mind. Of course, this is not always possible (there are developers who did not study well in school, and their optimization is completely at sea), but in most games the PS4 Pro console will allow you to either increase the number of frames per second (for example, from 30 to 60), or achieve a smooth and stable number of frames (instead of jumping 15-30 there will always be a stable 30).

What is the difference between PS4 Pro and regular PS4?

The console's hardware was updated - now it has an overclocked powerful processor and video card, an additional gigabyte of memory for switching between games and programs (so that programs do not slow down), and a 1 Terabyte hard drive was finally installed as standard for the console. All this helped raise the theoretical performance of the console from 1.84 Teraflops (a measure of system speed, see Wikipedia) to 4.20 Teraflops. In simple terms, PS4 Pro is 2.28 times more powerful than regular PS4 .

Inside the console, the hard drive connection format has been changed: previously it was connected via the USB 3.0->SATA interface. That is, no matter how fast a disk you insert into the console, it would not be possible to jump above the speed of USB 3.0. Now the hard drive connects directly to the SATA bus, so your brand new SSD can now transfer data at full speed (6 Gb/s).

Network functions have also changed: PS4 Pro has a new, faster Wi-Fi module that supports modern standards (802.11ac)

PS4 Pro has also become less noisy and consumes less energy.

The console's HDMI has also changed: it is now version 2.0, instead of 1.4. PS4 Pro will work with any cable, you just need an HDMI cable that supports the 2.0 standard to output 4k resolution in HDR color to your 4k TV. It is inexpensive, 500 rubles, plus one such cable is already included with the console.

Video recording, SharePlay, RemotePlay – what has changed?

Shareplay has been improved - in a regular PS4, remote connection and transmission of video and gameplay occurs in 720p resolution. On the new console, Shareplay runs at 1080p. Video recording of gameplay is now also done in 1080p (versus 720p for the regular PS4).

PS4 Pro takes screenshots in the resolution you play at. That is, even in 4K (2160p).

Does the console support 4K/UHD Blu-Ray movies?

No, it doesn't support it. Here's why: in the modern world there are very few of these discs - a couple of hundred titles (compare with hundreds of thousands of titles on regular Blu-Ray discs that the console supports) and services for streaming movies via the Internet are very popular (for example, Neflix, Amediateka, and so on ). Sony deliberately refused to support these discs, because it would increase the cost of the console (slightly, but still) and not so many people would need it. Remember that the console is primarily for gaming, not for watching movies (some console manufacturers forget this).

Will there be exclusive games for PS4 Pro?

Sony clearly writes about this in its FAQ for the console. “ PS4 Pro is not a new console. This is an improved, expanded, more powerful version of PS4" That's why no exclusives: Games will benefit, but players will not be split between the two consoles. Any game, old or new, will be available on PS4 and PS4 Pro. All games from 2017 will support some kind of enhancement for PS4 Pro.

Do you need a 4K TV for PS4 Pro?

It is optional; the console can work with any modern TV. Its advantages are visible in both Full HD (1080p) and HD Ready (720p) resolutions. The console upscales a game running in 4k to the resolution of your TV. As a result, games look much better: there is anti-aliasing, the image is clearer, and so on. In addition, improving graphics for many games works regardless of what resolution the game is running at. So you don't need a 4K TV. You can do without it. But you will get maximum pleasure from the game in Ultra HD resolution (2160p, also known as 4K) and with HDR support, of course.

What games does PS4 Pro support? How to distinguish them?

PS4 Pro supports all games that have been and will be released for PS4. Over the past three years since the release of the console, a lot of them have been released. But about 40 units will receive the benefits of PS4 Pro (improved graphics and support for 4k resolution) at the start of console sales. You need to understand that game developers are people too, many simply did not have time for the start of sales and will release patches for their games after.

The official Playstation blog lists the games that support the PS4 Pro at launch. Even old games will at some point look better on PS4 Pro in the future - for this, developers need to roll out a special update, which you simply download in the usual way, as patches for games are downloaded (that is, automatically).

Games that support PS4 features, if you buy them in retail, will have this logo on the boxes:

This means that the game has improved resolution and/or graphics right from the moment of its release.

They say the PS4 Pro doesn't have "real" 4k. This is true?

Most games really won't be rendered directly pixel-to-pixel in 4K. A very small number of games are capable of displaying their graphics in this resolution (3840x2160 pixels, i.e. 8.3 megapixels). These are mostly simple games with not very serious graphics.

It's worth realizing that the PS4 was pretty good at running most games natively at 1080p. Accordingly, rendering in 4K requires, roughly speaking, 4 times more power. And the PS4 Pro is only 2.28 times more powerful than the regular PS4. Therefore, only those games that used only half the power of a regular PS4 can easily run natively in true 4K on the PS4 Pro.

In order to achieve the game output in “fake” 4K, the PS4 Pro uses checkerboard rendering technology. Imagine that your TV screen is divided into squares, like a chessboard. Half of the squares, say white (as in chess), are rendered honestly, and the remaining half (black) are rendered by extrapolation based on previous frames. This approach allows you to reduce the resolution in which the game is rendered by half, but at the same time the final image visually closely resembles “real” 4K.

How to transfer data from your old PS4 to your new PS4 Pro?

This is done quite simply: you don’t have to worry about rearranging hard drives. You simply connect both consoles to the same Wi-Fi network, go to your PSN profile on both consoles and select “data transfer” in the PS4 Pro settings. To transfer from one console to another, you will need a regular ethernet cable. Both consoles must have the same firmware.

Is it worth upgrading from PS4 to PS4 Pro?

If you have read this far but have not yet understood the most obvious answer, we will write it: yes.

It's the most powerful console on the market right now, and the benefits of the PS4 Pro are pretty clear. Plus, if you already have a PS4, you can sell it and save money on buying a PS4 Pro.

If you didn't have a console, didn't have a PS4, only had an Xbox One or only a PC, now is the time to touch the world of PlayStation, try out PS VR in a much better version than on a regular PS4. If you have a 4K TV, then it's even more worth buying a PS4 Pro, because many games will look much better on it than when you played on a regular PS4.

I dedicate this article entirely to Sony PlayStation 4 review and the features of this console. We have already been shown the final design and shared, as well as shown, which we had the opportunity to purchase after the release of the console - November 29, 2013.

It is worth noting that the design of the new PlayStation 4 turned out to be as strict as its features: rectangular shape, straight lines, matte black and glossy plastic. The only difference is that the PS4 looks a little thinner and much more compact than its competitor. But you can see all this for yourself in the photographs, but for now let's talk about the technical characteristics. By the way, the first part is already ready - this material contains all the relevant information about nextgen consoles in a comparative analysis, and in you can read my review of the new Sony console.

PS4 Specifications Review

The Sony PlayStation 4 is powered by an eight-core AMD Jaguar processor. The set-top box uses a Radeon graphics chip, has 8 GB of GDDR5 memory, a 500 GB hard drive, a six-speed Blu-ray drive, two USB 3.0 ports, one AUX port and HDMI. The PS4 console also offers support for wireless standards: Wi-Fi (802.11 n) and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

PS4 controller

PlayStation 4 has the following dimensions - 275 x 53 x 305 mm. The new Dual Shock 4 controller weighs 210 grams with a 1000 mAh battery. The design also includes a built-in mono speaker and a touch panel. PS4 supports 4 controllers simultaneously. By the way, in the PS3, 7 controllers could be connected to the console at once, but according to statistics, more than 4 are used very rarely: in sports games or party titles.

I hasten to please many that the PS4 controller partially works with Windows OS. Analog sticks and buttons are supported by the PC, but rumble, light bar, and haptic surface are not available without controller support from the games themselves or drivers. Let me remind you that the Xbox One controller also works on a PC without any problems - I myself use it for playing games on a PC, although unlike the XBOX 360 controller, there is no option to purchase a wireless module (radio receiver) to connect to a computer.

What are the differences between PS4 and PS3 controllers?

1 of 4

Above you can see photos that show differences between the Dualshock 4 controller and the Dualshock 3. Here you can see in detail the key differences between the new and old controller. It is immediately noticeable that the design of the sticks has undergone changes, which differ in profile. The crosspiece has also changed, probably for greater finger comfort.

The updated PS4 Eye camera, available separately for RUR 3,599, offers two optical viewfinders with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels (per camera) that can capture images at 60 frames per second.

PS4 accessories

Important news, in my opinion, is the opportunity for future PS4 owners to independently increase the amount of disk storage, since a 500 GB hard drive is not enough for me. Unlike PS4, the Xbox One console does not have this functionality. I personally was bothered by flashing the hard drive for the XBOX 360. PS4 will also allow gamers to record video from the console directly via the HDMI output, which makes life much easier not only for professional streamers, but also for amateurs. It is also worth noting that owners of the PS Eye camera, during live streams of their games, will be able to display the image from the camera itself in the form of picture-in-picture mode, which is now very common among streamers.

I bring to your attention an additional overview of the PS4 features:

  • Update operations for all kinds of software will be carried out at night, and energy consumption will be quite low. Plus, power consumption may vary depending on the performance of the running game;
  • The noise level during operation of the console is generally lower compared to the PS3;
  • The fan speed will depend on the heat dissipation (some users had problems with the fan speed in the PS3);
  • Audio/video performance (eg music and movie playback) will initially be on par with the PS3, but will gradually improve through upgrades to reach standard 4K resolution.

The price of PlayStation 4 in Russia is 29,999rub., This is the cost of a PlayStation 4 kit with one Dual Shock 4 joystick. An additional controller will cost 3,599 rubles.

Sony has officially announced that developers of video games for the PlayStation 4 can use cloud computing technologies in their projects, which will increase the overall performance of the console, as is the case with Microsoft. It is worth recalling that players and owners of Xbox One will be able to get all the benefits of the new generation console not only from the console hardware itself, but also from the “limitless power of the clouds.” Microsoft has already “buzzed all ears” about this, saying that cloud servers will be able to increase the power of Xbox One several times.

Now Sony has announced such an opportunity, which is also offered by the new PlayStation 4. Developers can use the cloud to offload the main systems from tasks such as matchmaking or creating a network connection. Although in this case there will be some restrictions.

As I already said, PS4, unlike Xbox One, has no restrictions or mandatory requirements for having a permanent connection to the Internet. Therefore, Sony recommends using the power of the cloud, for example, when developing multiplayer games and online modes, within which the console is guaranteed to be connected to the Internet.

Another good news about the PlayStation 4 console was the information that the PS4 does not have regional restrictions, therefore, its owners will be able to play games purchased in any country in the world. A PS4 user will be able to buy the console in one place and the game in another. Once again the scales are tipping towards the PlayStation 4. The Xbox One will certainly have such restrictions due to the requirements of the company's policy regarding the provision of entertainment content. Sony has officially confirmed that there are no regional restrictions on the PlayStation 4.

As promised, the ability to play files from a USB drive was added in one of the firmwares - you can read about all the multimedia capabilities of the PS4 console in the article.

However, the new PlayStation 4 has one feature that definitely not everyone will like. One of the main advantages of the PlayStation 3 console was free access to the PlayStation Network, that is, access to the online part and multiplayer was free. Xbox 360, in turn, demanded money for multiplayer, asking to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold. In addition, Sony offered a subscription to PlayStation Plus, which gave owners of PS3 consoles a number of bonuses: such as early access to beta versions of some games, expanded functionality and exclusive materials. Subscription was not required, but the choice was offered. A PlayStation Plus subscription will now be mandatory for those who want to play online. This requirement will still not apply to owners of the PlayStation 3 and Vita portable, and also does not apply to cases where the console is played on the same TV. The cost of a monthly subscription is 449 rubles. Sony justified itself by saying that all proceeds will be used to support the PSN service and improve it. In addition, all PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive not only access to exclusive materials, discount programs, etc., but also one digital copy of an indie game every month, not only for PlayStation 4, but also for PlayStation 3 and Vita .

The PlayStation 4 game console has another very interesting detail. PS4 owners and smartphone owners will be able to order through their mobile devices and launch them immediately after they get to the console, without wasting time.

Here's what Suhei Yoshida (head of Sony Worldwide Studios) wrote on Twitter:

“When you purchase a PlayStation 4 game using your smartphone, this process will “wake up” your console and it will begin downloading the game you purchased. Immediately after the download is complete, the PS4 automatically goes back to sleep mode.”

In the photo below you can see the box design of the new PlayStation 4 game console. How

The PlayStation 4 box confirms that the console comes with a 500GB hard drive. The cost of the set-top box, as I already wrote, is 29,990 rubles, which is as much as 100 dollars lower than the cost of the set-top box from Microsoft. However, keep in mind that the PS Eye biometric camera will not be included in the kit - you will have to buy it separately for 3,599 rubles (as well as the second joystick, which will cost the same price). All exclusive AAA games for the console will cost 3,999 rubles.

Since the console itself turned out to be somewhat larger in size compared to the PlayStation 4 (343 x 263 x 80 mm for the XBOX versus 305 x 275 x 53 mm for the PS4), Microsoft’s box itself was larger.

I think you have received enough information in this and it’s time to get acquainted with the games that will be released on the new PlayStation 4 console.

I also bring to your attention a short video review of the PlayStation 4 and upcoming games.

The first PlayStation 4 model

Sony PlayStation 4 is an eighth generation video game console developed and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was presented to the public on February 20, 2013, and went on sale on November 29.

With three main console models on the market, it can be easy to get confused regarding the different specifications and features of each model. We are going to break down the PS4 specs in this article and let you know which model is right for you.

Dimensions

The first version, which Sony is phasing out in favor of a smaller model, is almost 11 inches wide, 2 inches high and 12 inches long.

The PlayStation4 Pro, with its enhanced power and graphics capabilities, is, on the contrary, more. Almost a foot wide, two inches tall and almost 13 inches long, which is a significant increase from the Slim in particular. The comparison shot below shows the dimensions of each model.

For those who care about how much space the console takes up, the Pro model is not for them.

The PlayStation 4 Slim, released in September 2016, replaces the base model of the PS4, and its basic specifications are largely the same as the original 2013 model. This means you won't see:

  • Improved graphics or performance, but there are a few small differences. The most noticeable thing is that the PS4 Slim is much smaller in size.
  • Its 11 x 10 x 1.5 inch body is smaller in size compared to the 12 x 10 x 8.2 inch body of the original. It's also 1.6 pounds lighter, weighing just 4.6 pounds.

Weight

The Pro is 3.3 kilograms (or more than 7 pounds) heavier than earlier versions. The PlayStation 4 Slim lives up to its official name, weighing a relatively light 2.1 kilograms. That's a little more than 4.5 pounds, which is nice for people who take their console with them and move it frequently between rooms and friends' houses, or who frequently take their console with them on trips.

The original PlayStation4 is a nice in-between of these two. It's heavier than the Slim - at 2.8 kilograms or 6 pounds - and not too much more than the Pro. As such, current owners of the first model should easily adapt to the Pro's weight.

Comparison of technical characteristics

The PlayStation 4 Pro has more powerful options than the Slim or the original PS4.

Although the processor itself is the same in all three systems, in the Pro version it is overclocked to 2.1 GHz, while the original runs at 1.6 GHz. It also has a GPU capable of 4.20 teraflops, while the thin and original GPU only achieves 1.84 teraflops.

Of course, with high productivity comes high electricity bills. The Pro in particular uses a ton of power when it's running; its maximum power is 310 W, but the slim version consumes less energy.

Unlike the first version of the console, the Slim version got rid of the semi-glossy finish and acquired a completely matte black look. The Slim also has rounded corners as opposed to the sharper design of the original model.

There are some improvements to the Ps4 Slim model in terms of technical specifications. It now supports 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is faster than the 2.4GHz wireless band on the first version of the console, provided you have a router that can handle that band. The Slim also supports Bluetooth 4.0, which is more energy efficient and offers better wireless audio performance. Another new addition that the Slim features is USB 3.1 support, which is twice as fast as the original 3.0 ports.

The PS4 Slim is also slightly more energy efficient overall. While the original PS4 is rated at 250 watts, the Slim is rated at 165 watts. Its more energy efficient design allows it to run a little cooler and actually be quieter.

Should you buy the Slim version if you have the regular one?

Slim does not have dramatic improvements compared to the first model. If you already have a full-fledged PlayStation4, buying the Slim doesn't make much sense. Also, if you want a more powerful PlayStation, the PlayStation 4 Pro is what you want.

PS4 / PS4 Slim vs PS4 Pro

Important! On November 10, the PlayStation 4 lineup began to look radically different as two new models hit retail. PlayStation enthusiasts well versed in specs and models know exactly how to tell one version of the console from another.

Comparing the entire family of PlayStation 4 products this generation - that would be PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 slim and PlayStation 4 Pro - is no easy task if you're willing to put in the time. Below you'll find how each version of the PS4 differs in size, processing power and, most importantly, looks.

  1. The Slim version is simply a reduction of the base model, released in 2016, Pro, in contrast, has a solid hardware update that significantly improves the performance of this console. Sony developed this model to compete with Microsoft in the 4K TV market.

Since 4K resolution is almost four times the resolution of FULLHD, it requires a more powerful GPU. Therefore, the Pro version is equipped with a 911 MHz GPU based on the AMD Polaris microarchitecture. This is 2.2 times more than PS4 / PS4 Slim. While it's still the same eight-core Jaguar processor from AMD, it runs in PRO at a higher frequency of 2.1 GHz, which is 500 MHz higher than the PS4/PS4 Slim. RAM in the Pro console is still 8GB of GDDR5 memory as in previous models, but it adds 1GB of regular DDR3 memory to support 4K resolution.

  1. The Pro version also uses a SATA III-based hard drive, as opposed to the SATA II-based solution of the original model. This means that if you install an SSD in the Pro, it can become significantly faster.

In terms of design, the Pro version is significantly larger and heavier than the base model, measuring 11 x 10 x 1.5 inches and weighing 7.2 pounds. Aesthetically, it maintains the slanted design of the original console, but opts to use the rounded corners that first appeared on the PS4 Slim. There's also a new LED power panel on the front panel. Unlike the Slim model, this version boasts an SPDIF port, so you can use it with soundbars that require an optical connection. Finally, it has three USB 3.1 ports, which are even larger than the Slim.

Other differences

This may be of interest to those who tend to use their console as a charging station for compatible devices of all kinds. Two early models, both came with two USB ports on the front of the console. About? This version has three USB ports. This is ideal for charging those new DualShock 4 controllers that run out of battery faster due to the capacitive touch panel.

In addition, this console is most commonly sold with a 500 GB hard drive. A smaller version will also come with this hard drive, but a 1TB version will also be available at retail. The Pro comes standard with a 1TB hard drive.

What are the benefits of PlayStation4 Pro

While the Pro currently retails for $100 more than the smaller version, its more powerful hardware allows it to run certain games at 4K resolution or resolutions higher than 1080 pixels. Some games may also receive frame rate improvements or may display higher quality graphics.

While its benefits are most obvious when paired with a 4K TV, it is capable of supersampling certain games on 1080p displays. Supersampling is an effective form of anti-aliasing that removes unwanted edge edges from playstation videos.

Are there any differences in the user interface

PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro use the same operating system and user interface.

Services and games

Interesting! You can buy games either on discs in stores or on the Internet, as well as buy digital versions of games in the official Sony store, PlayStation store.

When it comes to apps and games, this console has two excellent services. One of them is PlayStation Plus - this is a subscription, now it is a requirement for online games, without it you will not be able to play online. But this subscription gives you a selection of free games every month.

The second service is PlayStation Now. You can rent and then transfer a growing selection of PS3 games for two-day or 30-day periods, all smoothly and intelligently without loss. This isn't a great way to play games you already have on PS3 since you're paying for the privilege, but it can be a good way to catch up on any PS3 classics you missed.

PlayStation.Plus service

If you have not yet purchased this console and you have a FullHD TV, and you just need a good console for games - PS4, PS4 Slim is a smart choice for you. We wouldn't suggest upgrading to Slim if you already have a PS4, given that you won't get any, even minimal, performance improvements. If you have a 4K TV or are thinking of buying one soon, the Pro version is a better investment, with superior, more reliable hardware that can run games at better quality.
