The Chaldean priests, and then the Slavic Magi, also practiced fortune telling, calling on supernatural forces to reveal the future. The timing of fortune telling during Christmas time can be explained, firstly, by the fact that it is at the turn of time between the old and new years that a person is especially keenly interested in the future, in what awaits him and his loved ones in the new year. And secondly, during this period, evil spirits - all sorts of kikimoras, banniki (a special breed of brownies, an evil spirit that settles in the bathhouse), devils, goblin and other trash are most active and, therefore, more accessible to contact. After all, it is from the “evil spirits” that they receive answers to questions during fortune telling, and the main thing here is not to give up, to follow special rules of behavior: during a spell (conspiracies, whispers) wait for the rooster to crow, cross yourself, etc. Otherwise, you can die - Well, at best, just go crazy.
They wondered about life and death, illness, weather and harvest, about the wealth and well-being of the family, but the most reverent and most developed topic of fortune telling was, of course, marriage and the betrothed.
