Remembering this is always scary and painful, and then it leaves a residue in my soul, but I’m ready to share it with everyone. Firstly, sometimes it is useful to speak out, and, secondly, other mothers should know that this happens. But, first of all, my interview is for those who have given up, who feel that life is ending, that there will no longer be anything happy and bright. Maybe with my story I will just show that life goes on, no matter what.
Tell us a little about Masha. How was your pregnancy and birth?
Masha's pregnancy was the second in my life. Planned, without any problems. I always smiled and said that pregnancy was going just like in the textbook. And the birth was also very easy. Mashulka was born an absolutely healthy baby, 8/9 on the Apgar scale. She was a very calm girl, an angel in life! She and I didn’t know what colic, sleepless nights and whims were!

Did you immediately decide in the maternity hospital that you would get all your vaccinations on schedule?
I gave all the vaccinations to my eldest daughter, but her body never gave any reaction. And in the maternity hospital I immediately signed consent for BCG and hepatitis B for Masha.
You see, I, probably, like many mothers, did not study the issue of vaccinations in detail, because if the doctor says that it is necessary, then it is necessary. This means that this is a blessing; they did the same for us all. After all, there are things that are not discussed, such as, for example, getting your child tested to check his condition, or going to the pediatrician. And vaccinations for me were something to do.
“The doctors said everything was fine and it would pass”
To be honest, I may have heard about some consequences from vaccinations somewhere before, but it was so remote that I didn’t even take it personally, didn’t think about the fact that it was possible. And there has never been much publicity about such stories; I have not come across groups on the Internet that would discuss children who became disabled after vaccination or parents who lost children. Maybe I heard it somewhere out of the corner of my ear, but I didn’t attach much importance to them, because everything was fine, the eldest had all her vaccinations fine.
How did Masha cope with the vaccinations?
Masha also tolerated her first vaccinations well. The first DTP even without fever. True, we still had a small lump left from the last vaccination, but the doctors said that everything was fine and that it would pass.

How did it happen that the second DPT became fatal?
At 3 and a half months, we were admitted to the hospital with suspected pneumonia, which was later not confirmed, and we were diagnosed with bronchitis, although the only symptom was a slight cough. They were discharged healthy, the tests were normal. And literally 2 weeks after that we were told to get vaccinated against polio. It is necessary, that is, it is necessary. We did it, everything is fine.
After another 2 weeks, the first DTP was given, as I said earlier, we tolerated it without any problems! On March 21, a nurse came to our house and again said: “To get vaccinated.” I say: “Well, we did it recently.” And she: “You already missed a lot while you were in the hospital.” I don’t know why my mother’s heart spoke then, but the words literally burst out in response to her: “Can I wait a little?” And she: “No, no, no, you’ve already missed a lot.” I remember my thoughts at that moment: if the health worker says it’s necessary, then it’s necessary. I’m a good mother, I did everything as they said. I need to bring it, I'll bring it. In general, everything was fine with me, all the weigh-ins, all the tests, all the examinations. Of course, I cared about the health of my children. The slightest sneeze, puff, I immediately go to the doctor.
As a result, on March 23, I brought my child for the second DTP vaccination. The nurse, of course, talked about the recommendations: do not walk, do not swim, give paracetamol if you have a fever. All. We did it and went home. The child was fine all day, she played and smiled. By evening her temperature rose to 38C. My husband and I were warned, so we gave her medications that brought down her temperature. My daughter fell asleep, and so did I. I took her in because she was crying. It is clear that when a child has a fever, he is capricious.

This morning I woke up at 7 am. At first I didn’t understand what happened because she was sleeping. But then I saw something was wrong. She was somehow motionless, like a doll. I called my husband, he immediately started doing it indirect massage hearts, and I called at that moment ambulance. They arrived very quickly and stated that the child had died. I just didn't wake up. The Investigative Committee arrived, and I was surprised that the investigators turned out to be so humane, and the medical workers were callous and soulless, only one guy from the ambulance team tried to somehow support.
When I said that we got the DPT vaccine yesterday, the health workers turned a deaf ear and just kept repeating: “How did you sleep with the child? How could you go to bed with her? You probably crushed her in your sleep. Perhaps you strangled her and didn’t notice.” What? A six month old baby! A mother who has already given birth for the second time! Yes, for me this is generally beyond fantasy. All mothers know how sensitive sleep can be when a child sleeps nearby, and even more so, is sick. Then even the rustle wakes you up. And so they said this, and I didn’t know what to believe. The investigators assured me that this could not be, look at her, she would be blue, but here it looks like a toxic reaction. And off we go. Everything was like a fog! As if all this wasn’t happening to us!

How did the doctors at your clinic react to this?
They reacted the same way as many health workers in our city. When they called the pediatrician home, he simply did not come. They waited for him here for an hour and a half, and then went to the clinic to seize his medical cards, but by that time they had already been copied. Moreover, even my eldest daughter’s card had sheets pasted into it that were not there before. There were many inconsistencies in the testimony. And I understand perfectly well that anyone in the place of a medical worker would cover their bottom, because they have a family, they also have children, they also want to move on with their lives.

In general, at that moment I felt very sorry for our pediatrician, although everyone around me was twisting their finger at my temple: “Nastya, you should feel sorry for yourself!” And I felt sorry for him, it seemed to me that if he had a heart, then he was now very, very bad, that he was also worried and suffering. Although no one even expressed condolences. He was simply silent, and when I saw him, it became clear from his eyes what he was really going through! And the nurses spread dirty rumors throughout the city that the vaccine had nothing to do with it. The city is small, and mothers began to completely refuse DPT vaccinations, and they assured me that I had suffocated my child. For me it was painful and inhumane, it seems, you cover yourself as you want, but don’t do it in such a crappy way.
Have you thought about suing?
We immediately realized that it was useless to fight medicine, it was impossible to prove anything. And the courts are long and painful, they take years, and this will not bring the child back. If this could bring Masha back, I would gnaw the earth with my teeth. But alas! But somehow you need to live on for the sake of your eldest daughter.
“I just didn’t protect my child”
Who do you blame for this story?
Sometimes it is very difficult to understand that you can only blame yourself for this situation, no matter how much I would like to say that it is not my fault, it is. I just didn't protect my child. I just don't know enough. It’s my fault that, having become a mother, I did not receive pedagogical, medical and psychological education. I’m just a mother who wanted and wants children, and this sees the meaning of life.
Is it recognized that the tragic ending is the result of DTP vaccination?
An autopsy showed that the child died from a viral infection unknown etiology. The etiology was not cleared up even after six months. It is clear that viral infection was caused by vaccination. After all, DPT is a complex vaccine that contains live viruses. Weakened, but alive. And I don’t know which of these viruses killed my child, but the fact remains a fact. On March 23, she received a DTP vaccine, but on March 24 she did not wake up. And this is not sudden child death.

After Masha left, Sasha was born into your family. How did you decide to take this step?
We saw only one way out: we need another child. True, many insisted that it was not necessary, the body had gone through such stress, and so little time had passed since Masha’s birth. I was still breastfeeding her; I didn’t even have my period at that time.

You see, there are things that cannot be described or explained. And no one has the right to tell you how to do it correctly. I was just clinging to life, trying to get myself out of a state of depression, where there was not so much difference from a step into the abyss. After all, I began to hate myself, that I was such a bad mother and did not protect my child, and such a mother should not live!
And it so happened that on the 40th day after Mashenka’s death, God gave us a small miracle. When they confirmed that there really was a pregnancy, I pulled myself together and realized that I had no right to grieve anymore, because all this would affect the health of the little man who was born inside me. When such thoughts came up that I didn’t want to live, I told myself: “With yourself, Nastya, you can do whatever you want, but the little man in you is not to blame for anything.” And I pulled myself together. I waited. I was waiting for this child! For some reason it seemed to me that Masha’s soul quickly returned to us in this way.
How was your pregnancy?
This pregnancy was very difficult. I needed strict bed rest, any movement could provoke placental abruption, so I simply chained myself to the bed, going only for food and to the toilet. Sasha’s date of birth turned out to be another miracle - January 19, Epiphany. And I believe this is a sign from God. And if he takes something, then he gives, albeit not of equal value, but of equal value in return.
“It’s like the whole last year was just a bad dream”
And I just want to say to every mother who has lost a child and is afraid to give birth again. If you have such a thought that you want and need, then give birth, even if it’s scary. It will always be scary. You can be afraid all your life. And I understand that if I hadn’t gotten pregnant then, but had waited a year for my body to recover from stress, it’s not a fact that I would have decided to get pregnant again. I would have been even more afraid, but this consolation helped me survive that pain. I look at Sasha and there are moments as if nothing had happened. It’s as if the whole past year was just a bad dream.
Do you now vaccinate your children?
Immediately at the maternity hospital, I wrote a refusal of all vaccinations for Sasha. I have studied this issue up and down and I can say that it is scary to vaccinate, and scary not to vaccinate. But this time I took full responsibility on myself. I don’t know, however, what I will do in the future, because life is so unpredictable.

I am very grateful to my husband that he supported me at that moment and our family did not break up, like many others who could not survive the loss. On the contrary, we united and began to love each other more. I am very grateful to my true friends, family and friends who were there during difficult moments! I thank God for giving me such trials. “My 8-month-old child died after a routine DPT vaccination! Parents!!! Think 100 times before giving your child any vaccinations, read information about them and their consequences, about those affected by them. Some complications overlap with others. And there are many such cases when, after vaccination, a child either died or remained disabled for life. Information about all this is kept silent - it means money is involved and someone benefits from it!”
Larisa Barinova says that at the time of vaccination the baby was absolutely healthy. He tolerated the previous two DPT vaccinations well. By the evening of October 3, the boy’s temperature rose and snot appeared, but by the morning of the next day, Rostislav’s condition, according to his mother, returned to normal.
It worsened again on the night of October 9: the boy vomited. Larisa Barinova decided that this was due to complementary feeding: the day before she fed her son more broccoli puree than usual.
On the morning of the 9th, when the woman realized that her child’s condition was deteriorating, she turned to doctors for help. It was not possible to save the baby. The Ministry of Health of the Kaluga Region and the Investigative Committee are currently conducting an investigation into this fact.
The Internet public, meanwhile, has already drawn its own conclusions. Many social network users, like Larisa Barinova, believe that the cause of the child’s death was the DTP vaccine. We decided to find out how justified these suspicions are.
Agreed to comment on the situation famous Russian pediatrician Sergei BUTRY. He lives and works in Ivanovo, and on his pages on the social networks Facebook and VKontakte he covers in detail topics that are relevant to parents: vaccinations, vitamins, treatment colds etc.
Despite his busy work schedule: Sergei Butriy works 11 hours a day, he found time to give a detailed commentary on the tragedy that happened in Kaluga, as well as on whether the DTP vaccine is as scary as vaccine opponents make it out to be. Sergei Butriy accompanied each of his arguments with a link to primary sources.
The DPT vaccination could not directly or indirectly provoke pneumonia, says Sergei Butriy. – DTP – a vaccine with a whole-cell pertussis component – is perhaps the most reactogenic vaccine in the entire national vaccination calendar, that is, it most often causes undesirable effects: local (redness, pain and swelling of the injection site) and systemic (fever, malaise, sometimes even febrile seizures).
Because of this, parents are more wary of the DPT vaccine than any other, and because of this, the DPT vaccine has been the subject of an incredible amount of research into its safety. The vaccine was suspected of a variety of “sins”: that it provokes sudden infant death syndrome, persistent encephalopathy, epilepsy, dementia, etc. All at least somewhat justified suspicions that concerned only lesions of the central nervous system, have been thoroughly studied in rigorous studies, and the cause-and-effect relationship has been disproven. Millions of dollars and pounds were spent on this, after which the vaccine was rehabilitated and these suspicions were removed from it.
So, even the most aggressive critics of this vaccine never suspected that it could cause pneumonia. There is not a single scientific evidence of such a connection. Neither official instructions for the DPT vaccine, nor the most detailed professional analyzes of it adverse reactions Nowhere, even in half a word, is the possibility of causing pneumonia mentioned. Therefore, we must recognize that the tragedy that occurred cannot be related to the introduction of the vaccine.
- How complex (so to speak) is DPT? Is it easy for children to tolerate? Are there any contraindications for this vaccination? Is the local doctor required to prescribe urine or blood tests before vaccination to make sure that the child is healthy? How should a child be examined immediately before vaccination?
I have already said that unwanted reactions (not to be confused with complications) to the DTP vaccine occur quite often. For example, an increase in temperature above 38°C on the third dose of DPT occurs in almost every second child (see. directory Immunoprophylaxis 2014, p. 79). However, these undesirable effects are not too high price to ensure that the child is protected from tetanus, whooping cough and diphtheria. Of course, for DTP vaccines there are contraindications. These are primarily severe and progressive neurological disorders, afebrile seizures, acute infectious diseases and exacerbations of chronic diseases, etc. (see details). As far as I know about the tragedy in Kaluga from open sources, the doctor examined the child and excluded these contraindications, which means he not only had the right, but also had to administer the vaccine. No regulatory document in the Russian Federation obliges a doctor to monitor blood and urine tests before vaccination in order to prevent complications from it, and this is correct. Because these complications are completely impossible to predict from tests or anything else. The current practice of prescribing tests for each child before each vaccination has no scientific basis and can only serve as some irrational way to reassure parents who are afraid of vaccination.
The examination of the child before vaccination is carried out like any other examination by a pediatrician, and if it does not reveal obvious illnesses, according to the law of the Russian Federation, a doctor not only can, but also must vaccinate a child. More and more evidence is accumulating around the world that vaccinating sick children does not carry with it either an increased risk of complications from vaccination or an increased risk of complications from the disease itself (for example, see), but these recommendations have not yet reached Russia. In our country, even a minor ARVI is a contraindication to vaccinating a child. And even these overly cautious rules, as far as I know, were followed by the pediatrician.
- In your opinion, what is the degree of guilt in the incident of the local pediatrician who gave the go-ahead for the vaccination?
Considering everything I said above – none. A pediatrician is not a psychic; he cannot predict the future. He acted in the interests of the child, because he wanted to protect him from three very serious infections, the epidemiological situation for which in the Russian Federation is still unfavorable. He had no reason to expect complications from the vaccine - especially since this child had already been given the same DTP vaccine twice, and, according to the mother, it was well tolerated. And, I emphasize, the pediatrician turned out to be right: no complications developed from the vaccine. Pneumonia cannot in any way be considered a complication of DTP, because such complications with this vaccine have not been described in principle and because complications develop in the first hours or 2-3 days from the administration of the vaccine, and not on the sixth day.
If a child died in an accident after receiving DTP vaccination, would this be a complication? What if he fell out of the window? You understand that there is no connection between falling from a window and DTP, even if it happened immediately after vaccination? It’s the same with pneumonia and death from it. Yes it terrible tragedy, and I sincerely - as a doctor and as a father of two children - sympathize with this family. But the fact that the vaccination took place the day before is purely an accident, and the accusations against the local pediatrician and the vaccine are groundless, irrational and unfair.
Judging by the mother's description, which she posted for public discussion, the child suffered aspiration of vomit, which caused aspiration pneumonia, respiratory failure and the death of a child. In my opinion, this is not the fault of the mother, the pediatrician, or the vaccine.
- Some parents, after the tragedy, are worried that their children may also become victims of vaccination. How justified are these fears? Can parents do anything to ensure that vaccination does not have any negative consequences for the child?
Any negative event after vaccination, whether related or unrelated to it, always immediately comes under the closest public attention. This provokes a wave of publications in the media and social networks, mass refusals of vaccinations and sweeping accusations towards doctors and vaccine manufacturers. At the same time, cases when a child was not vaccinated on time and he fell ill, for example, with whooping cough, are discussed a couple of orders of magnitude more modestly and less frequently. Why do you think this happens? Because parents feel guilty and try to shut up and forget this incident. This imbalance in public awareness is what gives rise to anti-vaccination sentiments. On the one hand, there are regular messages on social networks about tragedies that coincided with vaccination (like the case under discussion), or true adverse reactions on the vaccine, on the other hand, there is silence about the consequences of refusal to vaccinate. This is unfair and dangerous. People should be told how many vaccine-preventable infections there are in the Russian Federation, how many children suffer and die from them. It is worth at least as wide coverage of cases of child death from tetanus, pertussis pneumonia, measles, pneumococcal meningitis, and so on - that is, from those infections that vaccinations protect against. So that parents are aware of the arguments on both sides.
The bad news is that the risk of adverse events and complications from vaccinations cannot be reduced in advance. Postponing vaccination to a later date not only increases the time that a child will be defenseless against vaccine-preventable diseases, but, according to some studies, even worsens the tolerability of vaccination.
No matter how cynical it may sound, tragedies have always happened to children, and, unfortunately, will continue to happen. Some of these tragedies will continue to occur after vaccination, simply because children are vaccinated frequently and the risk of coincidences is quite high.
In his book Deadly Choices, pediatrician Paul Offit cites a case where one day a father of a family brought his child to the family doctor for vaccination, waited in the waiting room for more than an hour and went home, so upset long line. At home, he put the child to bed, and a few hours later he found him dead in his crib. An autopsy showed that the child died from sudden infant death syndrome. This father later said that if the pediatrician had administered the vaccine to his child, not a single study in the world would have been able to convince him that the vaccine killed the child.
Anyone who works with children, especially a local pediatrician, is at great risk. Anything bad that happens to a child can be blamed on the pediatrician: both by the public and by the imperfect judicial system. But if this is the price for working in pediatrics, who would want to work in pediatrics anyway?
By unfair persecution, you harass doctors, provoke their burnout, and push them to leave the profession and do something much safer and more profitable. And those who remain in the profession begin to constantly play it safe, since unjustified medical exemptions from vaccinations do not lead to sanctions against the doctor, but an administered vaccine always does

Although no one even expressed condolences. He was simply silent, and when I saw him, it became clear from his eyes what he was really going through! And the nurses spread dirty rumors throughout the city that the vaccine had nothing to do with it. After all, the city is small and mothers began to completely refuse vaccinations, and they insisted that I had suffocated my child. For me it was painful and inhumane, it seems, you cover yourself as you want, but don’t do it in such a crappy way.
Have you thought about suing?
We immediately realized that it was useless to fight medicine, it was impossible to prove anything. And the courts are long and painful, they take years, and this will not bring the child back. If this could bring Masha back, I would gnaw the earth with my teeth. But alas! But somehow you need to live on for the sake of your eldest daughter.
Who do you blame for this story?
Sometimes it is very difficult to understand that you can only blame yourself for this situation, no matter how much I would like to say that it is not my fault, it is. I just didn't protect my child. I just don't know enough. It’s my fault that, having become a mother, I did not receive pedagogical, medical and psychological education. I’m just a mother who wanted and wants children, and this sees the meaning of life.
Is it accepted that the tragic ending is the result of vaccination?
An autopsy showed that the child died from a viral infection of unknown etiology. The etiology was not cleared up even after six months. It is clear that the viral infection was caused by the vaccine. After all, DPT is a complex vaccine that contains live viruses. Weakened, but alive. And I don’t know which of these viruses killed my child, but the fact remains a fact. On March 23 she was vaccinated, but on March 24 she did not wake up. And this is not sudden child death.

After Masha left, Sasha was born into your family. How did you decide to take this step?
We saw only one way out: we need another child. True, many insisted that it was not necessary, the body had gone through such stress, and so little time had passed since Masha’s birth. I was still breastfeeding her; I didn’t even have my period at that time.
You see, there are things that cannot be described or explained. And no one has the right to tell you how to do it correctly. I was just clinging to life, trying to get myself out of a state of depression, where there was not so much difference from a step into the abyss. After all, I began to hate myself that I was such a bad mother and did not protect my child. And such a mother should not live!
And it so happened that on the 40th day after Mashenka’s death, God gave us a small miracle. And when they confirmed that there really was a pregnancy, I pulled myself together and realized that I had no right to grieve anymore, because all this would affect the health of the little man who was born inside me. And when such thoughts came up that I didn’t want to live, I said to myself: “With yourself, Nastya, you can do whatever you want, but the little man in you is not to blame for anything.” And I pulled myself together. I waited. I was waiting for this child! For some reason it seemed to me that Masha’s soul quickly returned to us in this way.
How was your pregnancy?
This pregnancy was very difficult. I needed strict bed rest, any movement could provoke placental abruption, so I simply chained myself to the bed, going only for food and to the toilet. Sasha’s date of birth turned out to be another miracle - January 19, Epiphany. And I believe this is a sign from God. And if he takes something, then he gives, albeit not of equal value, but of equal value in return.
And I just want to say to every mother who has lost a child and is afraid to give birth again. If you have such a thought that you want and need, then give birth, even if it’s scary. It will always be scary. You can be afraid all your life. And I understand that if I hadn’t gotten pregnant then, but had waited a year for my body to recover from stress, it’s not a fact that I would have decided to get pregnant again. I would have been even more afraid, but this consolation helped me survive that pain. I look at Sasha and there are moments as if nothing had happened. It's like the whole past year was just a bad dream.
Do you now vaccinate your children?
Immediately at the maternity hospital, I wrote a refusal of all vaccinations for Sasha. I have studied this issue up and down and I can say that it is scary to vaccinate, and scary not to vaccinate. But this time I took full responsibility on myself. I don’t know, however, what I will do in the future, because life is so unpredictable.

If pharmaceutical companies really help people, why don't they develop treatments to treat the disease instead of vaccines?
In vaccination programs designed to protect all children without exception from infectious diseases that may never occur, there is one a big problem. It is that the weakest children always end up suffering - or dying. A better approach, at least from a humane point of view, would be to develop effective methods treatment of these diseases. They didn’t let us see him, but they said that the tests were normal. And on December 3 they announced that she had died,” the mother of the deceased girl told the StolisaS newspaper on December 5.
