What is required to transport animals on the train. “We are taking a cat with us...”: how to properly travel with animals on trains

Firstly, small pets (birds, hamsters, rats, cats, dogs) are transported in all categories without exception. At the same time, their own weight does not count as hand luggage weight.

Secondly, the transportation of animals is permitted in all carriages, except for SV and luxury carriages.

Thirdly, animals transported must be in special containers, boxes, cages or baskets. These containers should fit into carry-on baggage areas without much effort.

Fourthly, everyone must have a veterinary certificate and a receipt such as “Baggage in the hands of the passenger.” To receive this receipt, you need to pay for one piece of luggage with a total weight of up to 20 kg at the station.

Comments on the rules for transporting pets on trains

The task of any passenger transporting a pet by train is to take care of a special container for the pet in advance. It is necessary to choose a product that is suitable for the animal in many respects: size, material of manufacture, the presence of a drinking bowl, additional pockets, the ability to assemble and disassemble, etc.

As practice shows, collapsible carriers with wheels have proven themselves to be the best. Such containers allow the animal to feel most comfortable: during the trip, the pet can turn in different directions and also stand up. This will allow the animal not to sit in one position all the way, but to move.

Some carriers recommend getting a special portable enclosure for a safer trip, since transporting large and aggressive dogs also requires certain rules. This will allow other passengers and train staff not to feel fear and discomfort. In this case, people will not be afraid that an aggressive dog will bite them at the wrong moment.

If a pet If he is not used to such transportation, he must be accustomed to it in advance. This is done three weeks before the trip. The animal is accustomed to a container, a bag or an enclosure. To do this, the future luggage needs to be placed in the house in a cozy environment, with the bedding that the pet loves most. It is recommended to throw some treats inside your luggage.

Dogs must be trained to wear a muzzle. Words like “My dog doesn’t bite at all” are not an argument for controllers and handlers. It doesn’t matter whether the dog is kind or evil, but a muzzle is an indispensable attribute of the rules for transporting pets on a train.

It is also necessary to complete the relevant documents. Transportation of animals within the CIS countries is limited to veterinary certificate No. 1. It must contain proof of rabies vaccination given no later than 1 month before transportation. This certificate is valid for three days, so it must be issued immediately before the trip.

Until recently, transporting pets on electric trains and long-distance Russian Railways was associated with a large number of restrictions and financial costs.

In 2016, the rules for transporting animals were significantly relaxed. The main changes are related to the fact that animals were allowed to be transported in reserved seats and in carriages with seats on trains long distance, however, only certain classes. In addition, the transportation of pets no longer requires registration of veterinary certificates of Form No. 1 and any other veterinary documents. This rule applies to animals whose owner has not changed, and to pets whose transportation is not related to business activities.

Let us remind you: previously, animal owners had to draw up documents confirming the health of their pets. The certificate was issued in veterinary clinics for a period of five days.

Traveling by train is one of the most simple options transport your pet railway. To do this, you just need to purchase a hand luggage receipt for him. Its cost is stable for travel over any distance. Every dog needs such a ticket, regardless of its size and weight.

Rules for transporting animals across the territory of the Russian Federation

In 2014, new rules for transporting dogs on trains across Russia were introduced (mostly for long-distance trains). So, now the only option for such transportation is travel in a separate compartment. You can no longer bring your dog in.

How to transport an animal (weighing less than 20 kg) abroad on a train

In most cases, transportation of dogs on a train of this kind can be carried out exclusively in a compartment car (however, only if this is not prohibited by local veterinary rules). In this situation, you should purchase a special baggage receipt for the dog, the cost of which is equal to a receipt for twenty kilograms of luggage weight.

Transporting a large animal (weighing more than 20 kg) on a train

If you are transporting a large breed dog, you must ensure that you have a leash and muzzle. Also, one should not forget about the general rule for all dogs: it is necessary to obtain a special certificate from a veterinarian. Each dog is paid separately depending on its weight (either a standardized cost, or the same as for twenty kilograms of luggage). For example, the cost of transporting a dog whose weight exceeds twenty kilograms is calculated taking into account its actual weight.

How to transport a dog on a train if it is heavier than twenty kilograms? It is necessary to transport the animal in a separate purchased compartment of a compartment car (however, with the exception of cars positioned as cars with increased comfort). No more than two dogs can travel in this compartment, accompanied by their owners. Then there is no need to pay separately for your pet's travel.

Transporting dogs on a train within the state

What should you do before you set off? It is important to make sure that the animal owner understands well how to transport a dog on a train, what the requirements are, and what documents are required for this. Some of these issues will be discussed below. It is important to remember that the owner is responsible both for the safety of his pet and for the safety of the people around him - his fellow travelers. Legislation Russian Federation obliges the owner of the dog to take care of eliminating any threats to it (including the need to protect the animal as much as possible from accidental injuries), as well as to satisfy all its physical and emotional needs along the way.

In some directions, it is necessary to transport dogs in a non-working vestibule of a carriage (usually the first one behind the locomotive or the last one), if there is no possibility or desire to buy a separate compartment for transportation. No more than two animals can be transported in each such vestibule at a time.

Traveling on a train will inevitably be stressful for your dog. Therefore, it is better to prepare it in advance for such an event. It is important to purchase tablets or drops with a sedative effect and start giving them to your dog three to five days before the trip. This will allow the animal’s body to adapt to the drug. Moreover, the majority sedatives have a cumulative effect, which means that on the day of departure the dog will not worry too much.

During the trip, water should always be freely available. However, you should not feed the animal on the way. The last feeding should be carried out a day before departure so that the dog does not get seasick on the road. Immediately before boarding the train, she needs to be given a good walk.

Staying on a train for more than eight hours can be too stressful for a dog. It is preferable to choose daytime flights. It is much easier to monitor an animal during the day than at night.

According to experienced travelers, if you need to transport a small dog, you can safely cast aside all doubts and fears, since in this case they turn a blind eye to a lot (including the availability of the necessary documents and careful adherence to transportation rules). In this situation, the most important thing is to pay for your pet’s travel. The situation is similar with the transportation of medium breed dogs.

An annual rabies vaccination is mandatory (all others are considered recommended but not mandatory). Also, before transportation, the dog must be dewormed.

To others necessary document is a certificate in Form No. 1, which is issued by a veterinarian (necessarily an employee of a state veterinary hospital). To obtain it, you need to go through a number of steps, which will be checked by a veterinarian before issuing a certificate. First, the state requires your dog to be vaccinated against rabies. After 30 days, you need to come to the state government office with your dog and its veterinary passport. veterinary clinic, pay the established fee. Only after this will it be possible to obtain a certificate.

If you carefully understand how to transport a dog on a train and carefully follow all the required formalities established by law, then traveling with an animal will not bring absolutely any inconvenience. It is important not to forget about the dog’s condition and to minimize the stress that may be caused by the trip. It is also important to remain calm while traveling and try to be polite and friendly to passengers and train conductors. This will help avoid conflicts and misunderstandings along the way.
