It was decided to arrange a demonstration of the experiment to a large group of researchers in order to arouse interest in the phenomenon and organize its comprehensive study. In the evening we got together with the Kulagins in my hotel room, and Viktor Vasilyevich showed an amateur film he had shot a long time ago. I was amazed by the footage where Kulagina moves an object without bringing her hands closer to it, only with the help of head movements.

We started our experiments with a condenser microphone, as it is more sensitive. As soon as Kulagina brought her hands closer to the matchbox and tensed, pulses appeared on the oscilloscope screen... and immediately everything disappeared. The microphone has lost sensitivity. Having disassembled it, we saw that it was “broken” - its membrane was welded to the base. The microphone was soon fixed, but again it was a failure: the sound impulses were so strong that the condenser microphone could not withstand them. The ceramic microphone worked flawlessly. While the matchbox was moving, it gave out random impulses with very steep fronts. Kulagina's hands emitted ultrasound! This was a great discovery that literally shook our imagination.

For greater reliability, the experiments were repeated during the next visit of the Kulagins to Moscow. In this case, the pulses were recorded on magnetic film using a broadband tape recorder at my disposal (bandwidth up to 200 kHz). They were then read using a special setup on a cathode ray oscilloscope and photographed. Thus, it was possible to estimate the duration of steep pulse fronts - about 30 microseconds. But what the physical nature of these impulses was was unclear.

Are these acoustic pulses capable of being registered only by very sensitive instruments?

On this occasion, Gulyaev came up with a simple thought: listen to these impulses. Kulagina brought her hand close to the experimental physicist’s ear, tensed, and random clicks began to be heard. The more she tensed, the more often they sounded. Kulagina, who did not expect this from herself, became worried: was she harming the experimenter?.. He, calming her down, also persuaded her: “Turn up the heat.” No one was harmed during these experiments.

Subsequently, these experiments with the impulses he discovered were rechecked by Yu. V. Gulyaev in every possible way. Still, it is extremely difficult to believe in a person’s ability to emit acoustic impulses.

Also a big surprise for us was the glow of Kulagina’s palms, which occurs under volitional tension. This time the demonstration took place (on her next visit to Moscow) at the apartment of Yu. V. Gulyaev, three in a row: the owner of the apartment, Academician V. A. Kotelnikov and me. Subsequently, this radiation was also detected by instruments. A series of experiments were carried out, but the experiment carried out in my apartment was decisive.

Yu. V. Gulyaev’s employees installed a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a digital indicator in my office that recorded the effect on the PMT. At complete absence light, the last sign of the number on the indicator changed randomly, registering a dark background.

Kulagina put her palm to the PMT lens, and I fixed it on top with my hand. Both the hands and the photomultiplier were tightly wrapped in light-proof material. The room was hot, Ninel Sergeevna’s palm was covered with perspiration. For a long time we peered unsuccessfully at the rushing last digit device - all other digits were “zeroed”.

Ninel Sergeevna was worried. After all, similar experiments have been successful before. Why doesn’t the device show anything now? I felt her tense up more and more. Finally the number appeared and began to grow. It grew to 9, jumped to the next digit... Before we had time to come to our senses, numbers of the third digit were running on the indicator. A thousandfold excess of dark current!

I feel that Kulagina is exhausted, but she cannot stop, although I demand that she stop straining. Finally, I can’t stand it and forcefully take her hand away from the photomultiplier window. She immediately runs away and feels bad. Attack of nausea and vomiting. A similar thing happened to her after Kikoin’s demonstration of telekinesis, but then only his wife knew about it, and she whispered to us that Ninel Sergeevna was feeling bad and she should rest a little.

Why was it so difficult for Kulagina to make her hands glow under tight control conditions? During the first demonstration that you mentioned, these difficulties were not noted?

In both the generation of clicks and the generation of glow, everything went smoothly in the first experiments. But in the control conditions, the glow was apparently difficult due to the sweat that abundantly covered the surface of the skin.

Giving testimony at the trial and later, speaking on television in the “Vzglyad” program, you talked about streams of particles, corpuscles flying out of Kulagina’s palms: How was this established?

To find out the spectral composition of its radiation, in experiments with photomultipliers, we began to cover the device window with light filters.

It turned out that when exposed to Kulagina, glass plates become cloudy and a coating forms on their surface. In experiments on non-contact heating of the skin and with appropriate lighting, we noticed that sparkles were formed on the heated surface. The skin seems to be covered with tiny crystals. Moreover, Yu. V. Gulyaev told me that when he asked Kulagina to save him from an attack lumbar radiculitis, she warmed his lower back until he turned red. After which Gulyaev’s wife scraped off almost half a teaspoon of some salt. “What did you do with this salt?” I asked. “I gave it to our chemists for analysis.” They said it was regular sodium and potassium salt present in the human body.

Have any special studies been carried out on this salt?

Alas... V.V. Kulagin once told about a very simple experiment he had done. He assembled an electrical circuit from two metal plates placed vertically at a distance of five centimeters from each other, connected them to each other in a circuit through a flashlight battery and a microammeter. When Ninel Sergeevna brought her hand closer to the space between the electrodes and strained, the microammeter recorded a current of about ten microamps. I asked E.E. Godik, at that time the head of the special laboratory of the IRE AS USSR, which has now grown into a department, to conduct the corresponding experiments. In the laboratory, a simple installation was urgently assembled, which was a small brass box with a lattice window. A flashlight battery was placed inside, one pole of which was connected to the body of the box, and the other was left free. An electrode was mounted inside, connecting it with a shielded cable to an amplifier, which in turn was connected to a tape recorder.

When Kulagina, having thoroughly washed her hands, brought them to the window of the box and tensed, electrical impulses were recorded at the input of the amplifier and, accordingly, on the tape. Unfortunately, the circuit contained a signal limiter, so only signals exceeding a certain threshold were recorded. In General, however, it became clear that electrical impulses, like the acoustic impulses previously observed in microphone experiments, represent two facets of one process. In both cases, particles flew out of Kulagina’s hands, which, after traveling a relatively short distance, hit the microphone membrane or eardrum. One of two things: either these particles themselves carried an electric charge, or they ionized the air. Getting on the surface of the glass, they clouded it, getting on the surface of the skin, they formed tiny crystals on it, which irritated the nerve endings, causing an abnormal rush of blood and a burn, like a strong mustard plaster.

So, we have two facets of one process...

Yes, it is a united physiological, previously unknown Process. But that's not all. This summer, V.V. Kulagin told me about experiments related to the effect of Kulagina on water. As soon as she strains and holds her hand near the surface of the water poured into the jar, the liquid begins to taste sour. This is confirmed by litmus paper changing its color. The effect was the same when the jar was closed with a lid, and Ninel Sergeevna simply held it in her hands. These experiments were immediately repeated at my home and... the surprised witnesses tasted the “sour” water (naturally, they did not dare to drink it), and looked at how the litmus paper moistened with it changed its color. The next day we repeated these experiments in the laboratory of E. E. Godik, recording the process this time using a ph meter. The recorder displayed a graph showing a gradual change in the pH of the water from 7 (neutral) to 3-3.5 (acidic). When the jar was covered, the rate of oxidation dropped sharply. Apparently, the particles ejected from the pores of the palms were highly hydrophilic and were easily absorbed and dissolved by water.

Sorry, Yuri Borisovich, I’ll interrupt you. Are all the observations made not enough to recognize Kulagina’s ability to create streams of particles flying out of the skin her hands? And if this is so, then the telekinesis demonstrated by Kulagina is not a trick, but a physical reality.

It is impossible to deny the existence of a stream of particles. But for scientific explanation telekinesis, it is necessary to measure the magnitude of charges on bodies, calculate electric fields and show that their tension ensures the emergence of forces sufficient to move objects of a given weight in a force field. I note that sometimes the mechanical impact of flying particles can also have an effect. Since they, despite air resistance, travel a significant distance, it means that they fly out of the hands at high speed.

Yuri Borisovich, skeptics most often (albeit unsuccessfully) “convicted” Kulagina of using all kinds of strings, magnets, etc. Have you conducted any experiments in which the possibility of using such accessories would have been excluded in principle?

The most interesting, in my opinion, experiment not only eliminated the possibility of using any threads and magnets, but also eliminated the possibility of particles flying from Kulagina’s hands getting onto the object being moved. For this purpose, IRE produced a plexiglass cube without one face. With its open end, the cube fit tightly into the grooves milled into the thick plexiglass base. A cardboard cartridge case from a hunting cartridge was placed inside the cube. Such a device was conceived precisely in order to show: telekinesis is not a trick, it is real fact. After all, the object being moved is non-magnetic, and the possibility of using threads was completely excluded. The experience took place two years ago.

Knowing how much effort Kulagina has to expend in such experiments, I invited our neighbor, a doctor, as a witness. Ninel Sergeevna spent an unusual amount of effort before the cartridge case moved. When she moved to the wall of the cube, Kulagina felt bad. The doctor who measured her arterial pressure, was horrified. Upper limit was at the level of 230, the lower one almost reached 200. They called the neighbor’s husband, also experienced doctor, he stated a spasm cerebral vessels, gave the patient to take the medicines he had brought, and ordered complete rest. “The patient is close to a coma,” he explained to me. “Such experiments can lead to sad consequences...”

What exactly explains the movement of the sleeve?

If the movement of an object is explained by the accumulation of charged particles flying out of the hands, then what huge charges must be formed on the surface of the cube so that the Coulomb force of the required magnitude begins to act on an object consisting mainly of a dielectric. Accurate measurements are needed to ensure that this explanation is correct. They haven't been done yet.

How, then, does that very first experiment with an electrostatic voltmeter that did not respond to a moving pen cap explain?

The fact that the needle of the device did not deviate, although the object being moved was charged, can be explained by the fact that the charges on the object were “connected”, balanced with charges of the same magnitude, but opposite in sign, on Kulagina’s hands. The mechanism here is as follows. The charges flew away from the initially neutral hand and settled on the object. At the same time, the hand turned out to be charged with electricity opposite sign. No charges appeared on the electrometer. But after the end of the experiment, when Kulagina (with her charged hands) moved away from the table, the charges from the object, now no longer connected by anything, should spread along the wire and reach the electrometer... But the latter did not react. Maybe the charge was insufficient to deflect the needle?.. In a word, insufficiently correct experience does not allow us to draw a reliable conclusion. Research should be continued. But due to Kulagina’s health, this is hardly possible.

Have there been any other experiments that would help clarify the question of telekinesis?

There were, but, according to skeptics, they were just as insufficiently correct. Kulagina acted on a laser beam. The beam was passed along the axis of a tin cylinder, at the top of which a hole was punched. At first, the beam illuminated a small bright spot on the screen.

Being in the next room (this happened in Gulyaev’s apartment), I realized from the friendly exclamations of the experimenters that the spot on the screen had disappeared, and the space inside the cylinder seemed to be filled with pink fog. Yu. V. Gulyaev told me that in one of these experiments, two laser beams passed along the axis of the can with different distances to the side hole. The screen was replaced with photo-recording devices, and the light pulses were recorded on two tape tracks.

Knowing the time shift of the pulse signals on the tracks, it was possible to determine the speed of propagation of the impact. It turned out that the impact on a more distant beam was delayed much more than if we were talking about sound (when these experiments were carried out, we knew nothing about corpuscular flows). There was another similar experiment, conducted in my apartment. Unfortunately, it did not give clear results...

Do you remember any cases that cast doubt on the correctness of the subject’s actions?

Such an incident, which spoiled our mood, happened during experiments with a laser. One of the young observers stated (and then one or two more participants joined him) that he saw a thread and even a small object tied to it and lowered by Kulagina into the cylinder through a hole in its wall. I don’t believe that Ninel Sergeevna tried to deceive the experimenters. She didn't need this! Another experience with amazing result added little to what had already been established with complete certainty. At the same time, I do not question the honesty of the experimenters who saw the thread. Yes, they saw the thread, but there was no thread!

It is known that Indian fakirs are capable of causing quite large groups people have amazing, unnatural visions. There are known cases of mass hallucinations among worshipers in church. I myself once experienced visual hallucination, suggested to me by a hypnotist. In 1978, commissioned by Japan, the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company made the film “The Unique Abilities of People,” in particular Kulagina, who demonstrated “reading with the back of her head.” Behind her, the operator put up a table with a picture of a number, and she named this number.

When I began to ask Ninel Sergeevna about this experience, she said that, concentrating, she seemed to see what was being shown to her and that it did not matter to her whether it was a number or a multi-digit number. We decided to repeat this experience at my home.

I prepared a number of tablets measuring approximately 4 by 7 cm with random three digit numbers. He installed them on the shelf of the bookcase, to which Kulagina stood with her back, covering her face with a scarf. Then he walked away from the closet, sat down on a chair and, watching Kulagina, waited for the results. After about ten seconds, Kulagina named the number. Then I put up the next sign. All ten tablets were identified correctly, but some details of the experiment convinced me that no “reading with the back of the head” is happening here, that this is just a familiar ritual...

The essence lies in Kulagina’s ability to perceive the image of a number on a tablet from the consciousness of the person displaying the tablet... I will not expand on this matter; other cases of telepathy that I observed not only in Kulagina are much more convincing and interesting.

The peculiarities of these cases are such that the usually given “explanations” of telepathy are unusually high sensitivity the perceptive to the facial expressions of the inductor, who, as if involuntarily, “whispers” the desired answer to the percipient, etc., etc. - are completely excluded. Work with Kulagina continues in Leningrad. They give new, very interesting results.

It has been noticed that telekinesis, like other parapsychological abilities, sometimes appears as a result of injuries, illnesses, stress, electric shocks... This confirms the idea of ​​the hidden reserves of the human body, especially the brain. Many people assume that each of us is endowed with similar talents, we just need to create the conditions for their manifestation. It is no coincidence that entire sets of special exercises have been invented to develop these abilities.

By the way, there is the concept of a “second wind”, according to which a person at a certain moment seems to be exhausted, loses strength, but then suddenly switches to a backup source of energy, manifested in parapsychological phenomena such as telekinesis.
