Primary keratitis includes mechanical, physical, chemical and biological damage. The combination of various of these factors causes mixed keratitis.
Secondary keratitis is mainly symptomatic or specific keratitis, which can occur in various infectious or internal diseases.

The immediate causes of keratitis were inversion of the eyelids, corneal trauma, as well as the occurrence of the disease against the background of the plague and subsequently follicular conjunctivitis.
The objects of research were sick dogs that were admitted to the veterinary clinics “Centaur”, “LIMO” and the departments of surgery and obstetrics of the Crimean Agrotechnological University.
All sick animals were subjected to a general clinical examination with measurement of body temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate.
In dogs with clinical signs of damage visual analyzer examined and palpated the eye, as well as the tissues surrounding it; keratoscopy, ophthalmoscopy, examination with lateral focal illumination.
The diagnosis of keratitis was made according to the following clinical signs: photophobia, lacrimation, blepharospasm, superficial (conjunctival) or pericorneal injection of vessels, vascularization of the cornea by superficial or deep vessels, impaired transparency (infiltrate in the cornea), impaired surface gloss (tissue defect), decreased sensitivity of the cornea .
Of the 22 animals we examined, superficial keratitis was detected in 19 dogs (86.3%), which was accompanied by small gray infiltrates of the cornea that were detected during lateral focal examination. In 4 (18.2%) dogs, opacities in the central zone of the cornea in the form of a spot were noted, which impaired its transparency. The opacities were grayish in color with a shiny surface; in 15 animals (68.1%) they were vascularized. In 4 animals (18.2%), roughness of the cornea was noted, in 12 (54.5%) it had a matte tint. The intensity of the turbidity varied. When using ophthalmoscopy with good lateral illumination, the anterior chamber of the eye was clearly visible in 18 dogs (81.8%). Superficial vascularization was observed in 16 dogs (72.7%), pupil constriction was observed in 5 animals (22.7%), the fundus of the eye was observed in 4 animals (18.2%).
To determine the effectiveness of the solcoseryl eye gel, we selected 13 dogs, of various breeds, aged 2 to 4 years, with clinical signs of superficial keratitis. These animals were divided into 2 groups: control group - (6 dogs), which were treated according to the following Scheme:
1. A 3% solution of potassium iodide was instilled into the conjunctival sac, 2-3 drops 3-4 times a day.
2. Instillation of a 10% solution of dimexide prepared with a 2% solution of novocaine, 2-3 drops 3-4 times a day.
3. Tetracycline eye ointment (1%) – 2-3 times a day.
The second (experimental) group was also prescribed 3% potassium iodide, dimexide solution, and 1% tetracycline ointment, according to the above scheme, and also placed gel-based solcoseryl (20%) under the eyelids - 3-4 times per day. day.
The effectiveness of treatment was assessed by the change or disappearance clinical signs keratitis, for 25-30 days.
It was established that the studied dogs had body temperature, pulse and amount breathing movements was within normal limits.

Mild signs of superficial blepharitis were noted in 2 dogs (33.3%). The intensity of corneal opacification remained within the previous limits.
On the twenty-eighth day after the start of treatment, it was found that restoration of the specularity of the cornea and its transparency occurred in 4 dogs (66.7%). One dog was left with mild, barely noticeable signs of smoky-colored opacities, and another dog had subtle corneal roughness under side-focal lighting.
In the second (experimental) group, which included 7 dogs with superficial keratitis, an additional 20% gel-based solcoseryl was used. During the initial examination, superficial keratitis was detected in this group of animals. The general condition of all dogs in this group was satisfactory.
To treat dogs, gel-based solcoseryl was used in addition to the drugs used to treat the animals of the first group.
Solcoseryl is a deproteinized hemoderivative obtained from the blood of dairy calves; its mechanism of action is to stimulate the transport of glucose and nutrients into cells, as well as to improve oxygen metabolism in cells. Stimulates the processes of collagen synthesis and proliferation of keratoblasts in the corneal stroma, thereby reducing the likelihood of scars on the cornea and conjunctiva.
We used this drug in the form of a gel into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times a day throughout the entire treatment period.
After the start of treatment in dogs with superficial keratitis, there was also an increase in signs of inflammation of the conjunctiva, which was accompanied by redness of the conjunctiva, increased catarrhal mucous discharge, moderate blepharospasm, as well as a noticeable increase in the injection of episcleral vessels.
These signs disappeared on day 8, and the complete disappearance of keratitis symptoms on day 21 in 85% of animals.
Thus, we believe that subconjunctival use of gel-based solcoseryl ensures recovery of dogs with superficial keratitis 21 days after the start of treatment, and the effectiveness is ___ percent.
