Pharmacological properties

Cough suppressant, contains ingredients plant origin. Combined drug.

Codeine reduces excitability cough center, reducing the intensity of cough. In recommended therapeutic doses does not cause depression of the respiratory and cough centers, does not impair the function of ciliated epithelium and does not reduce bronchial secretion. Thermopsis herb has an expectorant effect, manifested in increasing the secretory function of the bronchial glands, increasing the activity of the ciliated epithelium and accelerating the excretion of secretions, increasing the tone of bronchial smooth muscles due to the central vagotropic effect.

Licorice root has an expectorant, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effect. Contains glycyrrhizin, which has an antiviral effect, and also potentiates the effect of endogenous glucocorticosteroids, providing anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects. Due to its pronounced anti-inflammatory activity, glycyrrhizin contributes to the most rapid relief of the infectious and inflammatory process in the respiratory tract.

Thyme herb extract contains a mixture of essential oils that have an expectorant, anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effect due to increased activity of the ciliated epithelium of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, increasing the amount of secretion from the bronchial mucosa, diluting sputum, accelerating its evacuation and loosening inflammatory plaques. In addition, thyme has weak antispasmodic and reparative properties.

Indications for use

Symptomatic treatment of dry cough of any etiology with broncho pulmonary diseases.

Symptomatic treatment should be short-term (several days).

Side effect

When taken in therapeutic doses, allergic reactions may develop ( itchy skin, urticaria). Possible nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, drowsiness. With prolonged use, drug dependence to codeine may develop.

Overdose

Symptoms: drowsiness, vomiting, headache, itching, miosis, depression of the respiratory center, bradypnea, arrhythmias, bradycardia, urinary retention, atony Bladder.

Treatment is symptomatic, including restoration of breathing and cardiovascular activity, gastric lavage, administration of respiratory analeptics, atropine and the competitive physiological antagonist of codeine - naloxone.

Interaction with other drugs

It is undesirable to use it with other drugs that inhibit the activity of the central nervous system. nervous system, due to the increased sedative effect and inhibitory effect on the respiratory center: sleeping pills, sedatives, antihistamines, narcotic analgesics morphine derivatives, anxiolytics, antipsychotic drugs. Codeine enhances the effect of ethanol on psychomotor function.

Chloramphenicol inhibits the biotransformation of codeine in the liver and thereby enhances its effect.

When codeine is used in large doses, the effect of cardiac glycosides (digoxin, etc.) may be enhanced, since their absorption increases due to the weakening of peristalsis. Adsorbents, binders and enveloping agents may reduce the absorption of codeine, which is part of the drug, in gastrointestinal tract.

Special instructions:

Long-term treatment with high doses may lead to drug dependence;

Codelan phyto should not be prescribed simultaneously with mucolytic and expectorant drugs;

Before prescribing antitussives, the cause of the cough should be clarified due to the possible need for special treatment;

Athletes should remember that the drug contains codeine and is a doping agent;

Caution should be exercised in case of increased intracranial pressure;

In patients with impaired renal function, codeine excretion is slow, so it is recommended to lengthen the intervals between doses of the drug;

Codelac Broncho with thyme - treat wet cough

Codelac Broncho - combination drug, eliminating the causes of sputum and facilitating its discharge. The complex effect of the product is due to the following components:

  • glycyrrhizic acid - has antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects;
  • ambroxol and soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • thyme extract (in children's elixir) - heals the bronchial mucosa damaged by cough and infection;
  • thermopsis (in tablets) - has an expectorant effect.

Codelac broncho weakens the cough reflex and promotes the clearance of mucus from the respiratory tract.

Codelac Broncho is prescribed for respiratory diseases accompanied by the formation of sputum (bronchitis, COPD, pneumonia and others). Antitussive drugs hinder its action, so they are not used in parallel.

The medicine rarely causes allergies and other side effects. Prescribed with caution for renal and liver failure, stomach ulcers, bronchial asthma.

Codelac Broncho is considered the most effective remedy among analogues based on ambroxol, which is confirmed by positive reviews from patients. Available in the form of tablets (for children over 12 years old) and elixir (for children over 2 years old). A little more about him.

Elixir

  • 6–12 years - large measuring spoon (5 ml), 15 ml per day.

Duration of use - 5 days. A longer course is determined by the doctor.

Daria, mother of Vika and Sasha:

“When one child in a family gets a cold, the second one also gets sick. I prefer to buy drugs that are suitable for both my three-year-old daughter and my ten-year-old son. It's more practical and economical. This elixir clear instructions, a convenient spoon for dosing: on one side for babies, and on the other for older children. The taste is, of course, not for everyone, but it helps quickly. Within half an hour, phlegm is removed, and breathing is much easier. The drug is sold in almost every pharmacy, the price is affordable.”

What to replace the medicine with?

To treat dry cough in children, medications such as:

  • and - analogues of Codelac Neo (for children) according to the active substance. Available in the form of drops and syrup, they have identical properties and contraindications.
  • Bronholitin - effective, but not the most safe remedy, suitable for children from three years. Contains ethanol and has many contraindications.
  • Glycodin - prescribed to children over 1 year old. Not suitable for patients with bronchial asthma and liver dysfunction.

Analogues of Codelac Broncho (expectorant):

  • - reliable and safe drug for the youngest patients;

An analogue of the drug Codelac Broncho - Gedelix - syrup helps get rid of the reason why the child has a cough.

  • - long known and effective remedy for children from 3 years old;
  • - a medicine for children older than one year, contraindicated for peptic ulcers of the digestive system.

The components of each product can cause allergies in a child. If your baby has an individual intolerance to the drug, use a drug with another active substance. A doctor will help you choose it.

The range of cough medications is huge, and many of them are sold without a doctor's prescription. This does not mean that they are absolutely safe and can be used at the first manifestations of the disease.

The choice of remedy depends on the nature of the cough, accompanying symptoms, individual characteristics and the patient's age. Therefore, only a pediatrician can prescribe medications to a child.

PS: Just Codelac - differences between the adult version

The drug is produced in the form of yellow-brown tablets with inclusions. Its cost ranges from 140 to 300 rubles and depends on the pharmacy and region of sale. The product is produced by the domestic company Pharmstandard. Since 2003, this manufacturer has been developing and supplying affordable but high-quality products.

Codeine, which is part of the drug, belongs to the group of narcotic analgesics.

Medicine effective after 30 minutes(maximum hour) after application, the effect lasts 2–6 hours. The duration of treatment and dosage is determined by the doctor.

Lisa, Pasha's mother:

“I used to buy myself a simple Codelac for a cough. I know what is it strong drug with codeine, so I was very surprised when the pediatrician prescribed some kind of “Neo” for my son. It turned out that the names and manufacturer are the same, but the composition is completely different! The prescribed medicine helped quickly. The doctor said that it is safer than regular Codelac and does not contain codeine. When the dry cough went away, we switched to the Broncho version. This remedy removes phlegm. It turned out like this complex treatment. The child drank the syrups with pleasure, there were no side effects or allergies.”

Codelac weakens nonproductive cough, caused by any bronchopulmonary disease. His effective action explained by the combined composition:

  • sodium bicarbonate (soda)- reduces the viscosity of sputum;
  • licorice- has an antispasmodic effect;
  • thermopsis grass- accelerates the removal of sputum, stimulates the respiratory center;
  • codeine- a narcotic analgesic, has an effect on the cough center, reducing the manifestation of the symptom, regardless of its cause.

With prolonged use, the drug causes addiction.

Overdose threatens severe side effects: depression of the respiratory system, effect on peristalsis, loss of coordination, headache and others unpleasant symptoms. For these reasons, since 2012, over-the-counter sales of drugs containing codeine have been prohibited in Russia. Due to its composition, Codelac is prescribed to children only in extreme cases.

pharmachologic effect

Thanks to the balanced composition of biologically active substances, KODELAK® PULMO gel: - helps improve blood supply to the tissues of the bronchopulmonary system; -has a locally irritating, “distracting” effect; -promotes the removal of sputum and reduces stagnation in the bronchopulmonary system, thereby relieving cough; -stimulates protective functions body and can be used in case of hypothermia as a means for preventive restorative massage. The components of the gel have anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effects, and have a beneficial effect on the respiratory tract due to the sufficiently high concentration of vapors of essential oils and other gel components in the inhaled air (aromatherapy). This makes it possible to use CODELAC® PULMO gel for acute respiratory infections and other respiratory diseases, including to relieve cough and improve sputum discharge. KODELAK® PULMO contains natural ingredients obtained from coniferous plants growing in ecologically clean areas of Siberia. The properties of CODELAC® PULMO gel are due to the complementary action of its constituent components. Fir oil has a complex effect due to the content of a large number of biologically active compounds that determine its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, tonic and blood circulation-improving effects. Fir oil has a local irritant effect, helps improve microcirculation, its constituents essential oils capable of exerting a bactericidal effect. Thanks to its complex anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effect, fir oil is used for diseases of the upper respiratory tract and acute respiratory infections. Camphor, influencing the nerve endings of the skin, causes reflex expansion blood vessels and blood flow to the area of application, as well as to the tissues of the bronchi and lungs, improving their nutrition and oxygen saturation, facilitating the discharge of sputum. These properties of camphor determine its locally irritating, distracting, local analgesic, anti-inflammatory and moderate expectorant effect. In addition, camphor also has an antiseptic effect. Camphor is widely used for colds and inflammatory diseases, including to relieve cough and improve sputum discharge. Turpentine has a “distracting”, analgesic and antiseptic effect, therefore it is used in a number of ointments, including initial stages upper respiratory tract diseases.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption After oral administration, butamirate is quickly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. After taking 150 mg of butamirate, the maximum concentration of the main metabolite (2-phenylbutyric acid) in the blood plasma is reached after approximately 1.5 hours and is 6.4 mcg/ml. Distribution and metabolism Hydrolysis of butamirate initially to 2-phenylbutyric acid and diethylamino-ethoxyethanol begins in the blood. These metabolites also have antitussive activity, and, like butamirate, are largely (about 95%) bound to plasma proteins, which causes their a long period half-life. 2-phenylbutyric acid is partially metabolized by hydroxylation. At readmission no drug accumulation is observed. Elimination The half-life of butamirate is 6 hours. Metabolites are excreted mainly by the kidneys. Moreover, 2-phenylbutyric acid is mainly excreted in the form associated with glucuronic acid.

Special conditions

* prolonged treatment with high doses can lead to dependence on the drug; * Codelac phyto should not be prescribed simultaneously with mucolytic and expectorant drugs; * before prescribing antitussives, the cause of the cough should be clarified due to the possible need for special treatment; * due to the possibility of developing a sedative effect, during treatment it is not recommended to engage in activities that require increased attention, speed of mental and motor reactions; * athletes should remember that the drug contains codeine and is a doping agent; * caution must be exercised in case of increased intracranial pressure; * in patients with impaired renal function, codeine excretion is slow, so it is recommended to lengthen the intervals between doses of the drug; * Drinking alcoholic beverages is prohibited while taking Codelac® phyto.

What are the composition and release form of Codelac tablets?

The pharmaceutical industry produces a drug in tablets, they may have different colors, varying from brown to yellow, normally there may be splashes of white or dark brown.

The tablets contain the following active ingredients: codeine, added sodium bicarbonate, in addition, powder prepared from licorice root and thermopsis lanceolate herb. Among the auxiliary compounds we can note: potato starch, as well as talc and microcrystalline cellulose.

The medicine is sold in contour packages. You can buy it without a prescription. The shelf life of the medicine is four years from the date of pharmaceutical production of the tablets. Codelac should be stored at a temperature of no more than 25 degrees.

What is the effect of Codelac?

The drug Codelac has a combined composition. Codeine has a central antitussive effect and helps reduce the excitability of the cough center. When used in excessive doses, it can depress breathing and also inhibits peristaltic movements of the intestines, in addition, it causes miosis, sometimes constipation, nausea and vomiting. This active ingredient may provoke drug dependence.

The next active compound of the drug Codelac is thermopsis herb; it contains isoquinoline alkaloids, which have a stimulating effect on the respiratory center and also stimulate the vomiting center. This representative of the flora has a pronounced expectorant effect, as a result, the secretory function of the bronchial glands increases, in addition, the activity of the so-called ciliated epithelium increases, and in general the evacuation of secretions is accelerated.

Another component of Codelac is sodium bicarbonate; it is capable of changing the pH of mucus, which is localized in the bronchi, changing it to the alkaline side. In addition, this substance reduces the excessive viscosity of sputum, and also stimulates the motor function of the so-called ciliated epithelium.

Licorice root, which is also present in the drug Codelac, has an expectorant effect on the body due to the glycyrrhizin present in the plant, it activates the ciliated epithelium that lines the trachea and bronchi, and also strengthens secretory function mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.

In addition to the listed properties, licorice root has an antispasmodic effect on the body, in particular on smooth muscles, this is due to the flavone compounds present in this plant.

The drug promotes high-quality evacuation of mucus directly from the respiratory tract when the patient has a severe cough, in addition, the drug weakens the cough reflex. About thirty minutes or one hour after taking the tablets, the maximum effect of the medication occurs.

What are the indications for use of Codelac?

The drug Codelac is prescribed as symptomatic treatment if you have a dry cough of various origins arising against the background of bronchopulmonary diseases.
